This is a pretty wild turn of events, seems like a good move and should hopefully stop some of the mindless negativity spewing from Seven West.Southern Cross Media - future owners of The West Australian have signed on as Bears sponsors for 3 years. Is this major sponsor @Red&BlackBear ?

The West Australian has been one of the fiercest critics of the NRL’s foray into the western state. Will a new deal with Southern Cross Media change this?www.afr.com

When the NRL announced there would be a new team launching in Perth, the town’s dominant newspaper, The West Australian, immediately declared in a front page they were “The Bad News Bears”.
West Australian Premier Roger Cook had delivered a $65 million “indulgence” that “delivers questionable economic benefit to the AFL-mad State for a game with negligible local fan base and no elite players”, it said.
Perth Bears chief executive Anthony De Ceglie has signed a deal with Southern Cross Media guaranteeing coverage for the team in Western Australia. Trevor Collens.
It was considered a broadside from Seven West Media, which owns the newspaper, is controlled by billionaire Kerry Stokes and broadcasts the rival AFL code on its free-to-air Seven Network.
Now, the Perth Bears have signed a three-year deal with The West Australian’s soon-to-be parent company guaranteeing it coverage. From later this month, pending a shareholder vote, Southern Cross Media will take over Seven West in a deal announced in September. It will create one company owning television, radio and print media assets.
Southern Cross owns the Triple M and Hit radio brands, a network of regional stations and the Listnr app. In WA, it owns Triple M 92.9 and Mix 94.5 and 34 regional radio stations. The deal will give listeners in WA the ability to win Perth Bears merchandise and experiences, and give the network access to its players and coaches for interviews and coverage.
Adding to the intrigue is the fact that the inaugural chief executive of the Bears, Anthony De Ceglie, is the former editor-in-chief of The West Australian and a former news and current affairs director at Seven. He left after a year of torrid headlines about changes to television news that included a brief comedy segment on Friday afternoons and a short, daily horoscope.
“We are here to grow and develop the greatest game of all in WA and this partnership will play an integral part of this vision,” De Ceglie said.
The Perth Bears are a relocation of the North Sydney Bears, a storied club whose origins go back more than 100 years. From 2027, they will join the NRL as its 18th team, led by rugby league great Mal Meninga.
This is a huge moment and deal for not only the Perth Bears but also Rugby League in WA. It will end up being one of those crucial deals most fans are unaware of or don’t know much about but could end up being one of the most important arrangements.Southern Cross Media - future owners of The West Australian have signed on as Bears sponsors for 3 years. There are no factions, everyone is very much unified. There are no disagreements. Some good stuff coming from the bears, but something must be putting off a logo reveal.
It seems like they’ve had a branding and colours piece of work done already as their website and socials have been updated with a nice shade of red and font. It seems like this is the direction they are going but it’s just missing the logo.
Is it a lack of major sponsor deal that’s holding it up? Is it disagreements with the norths faction if they wanted to go a different direction? Are they just waiting to announce it next year?
Had they announced it with some merch even just the last couple weeks they could have sold a bunch of merch coming into Xmas.
A weekly RL show and any game coverage would be amazing, though honestly I'd be happy if they just start including RL in their regular programming.Be great to have a weekly RL show on their platforms.
Major sponsor looks to be IBM according to reportsBears signing a $2m a year main jersey sponsorship with old friends Cash Converters …
I read that they plan to open 29 new stores across the country… Business is booming looks like…
who cares what you think cob. You’re coming across like an absolute flog on this forum. How disappointing. I have moral concerns regarding businesses of that nature, but even more embarrassing is that, after such a long wait, the major sponsor has been revealed to be a company owned by a board member.
