Can we not lecture about strategic silence? If someone threw a pipe bomb into a "different" crowd, it would be scandalous. Imagine if the perp was islamic or the potential victims were jewish.
The problem with the protest yesterday was that the rushed laws by Minns meant that the Supreme Court could not ban the Town Hall protest NOR could it authorise it.
Stupid drafting of the legislation meant that stationary assembly was still permitted, but marching was not.
The problem started when the police issued a move on order after Town Hall was declared a Major Event Area. Why ? Dunno. That stirred everyone up and then "move on orders" were issued. Then some twits decided to march to Macquarie Street. That's a can of worms right there. In came the linked arms, pepper spray and horses.
Bottom line, violence is always bad outcome. I think it could have been prevented / better handled.
Everyone has the right to protest in a democracy and to take that right away is wrong. It doesn't matter if you don't agree with the premise of the beef. People have the right to have a say.
Many people are surprised why Herzog was allowed in the country, as other "aggressors" would probably would be not. Or maybe we should put it more delicately - he would have been discouraged from coming. The Bondi atrocities noted, there are other less controversial dignitaries that could have taken his place.
