Even AFL back then was physical. But that has been taken away. Though I still hated it back then. Probably cause I'm from Newcastle which just lives and breathes Rugby League.
League has lost most/a lot of its physicality too

Imo gone too far out of concussion fears but they don’t want to get sued. Same with banning punching in games or not penalising diving

It’s funny when they have old nrl promo videos and it’s sbw doing shoulder charges on Joel Clinton

But inherit in Rugby League is contact which still remains and we still get to see big hits etc just done cleaner. Which was drummed out of AFL totally really given how it used to be played.

It’s like when they promote origin games with the fights from back in the day. Can they give it a rest we all know there would be mass send offs if that actually happened now

It’s a balance

Even accidental head shots used to be a send off and now more like a penalty

I miss a lot of the physicality

It was a good contrast to the good attacking footy

A lot of the changes are due to one court case in America which aren’t relevant to rugby league (no helmets, governing body hiding knowledge of cte)

That head in the sand if you don't believe that stuff is relevant and Rugby of both kinds is trying to find the right balance (I think Union has gone a bit too far though). CTE is still being understood, but one of the key things is that NFL limits the exposure now in training to events that can cause a lot of the head trauma that goes unnoticed in Rugby League and it's not just the big hits that cause problems, rather all the micro knocks that happen a lot in Rugby League in training and throughout a match. I see that being the next big change to Rugby League, contact sessions at some point will be agreed to be limited to say a session a week, which will make it harder to have an amazing defence.

Watching NFL I think we do the head knocks way better than they do in game situations though.

My son made an interesting point to me, he`s going to graduate as a doctor soon, what if they find a cure for CTE, concussion etc. etc. You`ll love it WB, that means we can go back to the rough stuff.🤣🤣🤣

Yeh I read somewhere a study where training is where most of the problems occur

Then you have a sport like ufc which embraces what it is and is one of the fastest growing sports in the world

At some point someone will sue one of the major leagues, and something like a you knew what you were signing up for document will appear to say that you accept the risks of playing. It's not like there isn't loads of education sessions happening. But you also can't have it go back to the 80's style as there is a duty of care to stay within the rules of the game, where fighting and head high tackles have always been outlawed.

Even UFC has rules like no eye gouging etc and also if you are knocked out, then you aren't even allowed to train for 30 days where an assessment is made if you are right to start training again. So even sports like that have rules around concussions and risk.

This will touch a nerve with followers of these sports, and PV certainly knows how to touch nerves
That`s f**kin priceless, he`s really come out swinging once he`s got off that airplane.
The bloke who famously doesn`t drink might have had a couple to steady the nerves after that in-flight mishap after they left.

Should they use now illegal shots in promos? No

Has the game lost most of its physicality? lol no, not even close. Its still the hardest team sport on the planet and thats not changed jus because you cant punch anyone in the head any more

Just being back proper shoulder charges and the odd punch up

I’m ok with no head first spear tackles to the ground lol

There were so few players who could pull them off well. Plenty went bad and that's not good for any player on both sides of the coin. As for the odd punch ups, kids replicate what they see on the field, so if they see NRL players doing it, then it's considered acceptable at the lower levels as well. We need to set a standard, and if we want juniors playing the game, that sort of stuff can't be seen to be acceptable, otherwise your just driving mothers to ensure they play soccer or aerial ping pong.

Inglis shoulder charge on young is what did it

Then judiciary didn’t give him a long suspension so of course the nrl overreacted and banned it

If it goes wrong give them a long ban

The current rule where you have to wrap your arms around is just a bs shoulder charge anyway

Leagues a tough game

Soccer mums are never going to let their kids play it no matter what rule changes they implement

And league still get soccer juniors as nrl players anyway as dean young is a good example

League a collision sport
