That is a cop out, we have had virtually no change from last year.

How many actual penalties were in the 20-40m line? Aside from a head high which is still a penalty now not many.

The top 3 teams have been the most settled and as a result are having no trouble keeping teams out.

Pretty much every game had 2-3 very soft tries in it. That is players not rules or referees

I’ll assume that you’re bring sincere which is more than you have assumed of my viewpoint so:
1. The stats are out and there is a massive change from last year. So it isn’t just a vibe. It’s garbage. Same as 2021 was garbage. It was garbage then and it is garbage now.

The reason why is simple: If a game was all about attack and points and being as fast as you can possibly be and having ball in play and all those buzzwords, then one would go and watch AFL or basketball or even Super Rugby (you can have a look at those scorelines if you want). Rugby League is supposed to be a contest between attack and defence. Once the balance is too far one way, then it needs to be corrected or adjusted.
2. The thrust of your argument is be better. Teams have to adapt blah blah. One could point to any poor play under any subsect of rules and say well don’t change any rules because there are always s### teams and always good teams. Just be better. Why change unlimited tackles for instance. Couldn’t teams just be better at getting the ball back? Lower scores because there is too much wrestling? We’ll get better in attack.

There is so much data and statistics telling you at this point that the more restarts there are equals more blowouts and a game that closer resembles touch football than you have to be wilfully ignorant at this point.

The biggest thing in all of this is I don’t want referees to be pedantic and to have so much influence. Honestly who cares if there are hands on the ball occasionally. Or that the ruck is one millisecond slower than usual? Stop looking for penalties all the time.

Wouldn't even call that a good game to be honest. It will only be remembered for the record, most of the game was boring.

It's laughable to suggest any game this season has "been the best games in years", and certainly not several of them.
You love "completions and getting to the kick" right?

I think for example you would have been sickened by that sequence of play in the Knights v Sea Eagles game when the Knights were on the attack then there was an interception then the Sea Eagles winger forgot to get into dummy half and then Best picked the ball up (a great defensive play) and ran it almost all the way back.
I thought that was off the charts brilliant entertainment.

Mate that is essentially AFL like. It seems like you are watching the wrong sport

Well perhaps it wasn’t but I’ll it was better than the other games this week.

No the sport I am watching is flying and you are just whinging like an old man.

Haha the passage of play was a pretty typical AFL filled with teams making a bundle of errors in a short space of time. It wasn’t good play, it was people making mistakes.

Amongst the clearest signs that defense had become far too dominant was the short dropouts that were normal last two year because defenses had total contempt for attacks being able to score even from 20m out.
Add to that the attacks having to resort to bombs to create chances a ridiculous amount of time compared to any time in the history of the sport.

Two conferences like the NFL is a lame idea and totally unnecessary… they have to do that because they have 32 teams and only play 17 games …I hate it that if the two best teams are in the same “conference” that they might not have an opportunity to play the GF..

The NRL will have 20 teams soon … just play every team once and another 3-4 games..

Actually I think you could do both those approaches. Have a conference of 4x5 teams. Play every team once and the teams in your conference twice.

You would group all the rivalries together in the same conference to maximise derbies. This creates a 23 round season, opening up a month for an origin/international window.

Churchill conference
- roosters
- rabbits
- dragons
- sharks
- Bears

Provan conference
- parra
- bulldogs
- panthers
- manly
- tigers

Beetson conference
- Brisbane
- dolphins
- titans
- cowboys
- knights

Messenger conference
- warriors
- NZ2
- Chiefs
- raiders
- Storm

No, people are watching the games and coming to the conclusion that the games are trash, and the set restarts are having a significant impact.

Except last year was very successful as far as viewing was.

Not too many people were disappointed in the Canberra v Broncos game last year.

There ended up being some decent games, once the quality players took over.

Round 1 last season, just like this year 2 teams scored 50.

376 points scored.
This year round 1 had 404 scored.

Last year Round 2 had 413 scored
This year 404 scored.

So the game is similar to where it was this time last year, if the end product is the same as last year. Then it is no worse off

No one has said that the 2019 version was better, maybe there are tweeks to have still. Extra interchanges or something but the end product of this version is very good.

Just the garbage early on isn't

You just go off if the game is close or not?
I think you got too many years of slow play, completions, structure, wrestling and the like and that is what you think RL should look like. Errors are a great part of sports.

No, they are not. If I want to see people drop the ball all the time I’d watch fumbleball.

On to the aspect of close games, no not all close games are brilliant, but is a grandstand finish or a game that is close more likely to be remembered? Absolutely.

I’ll give you an example, the Roosters/Souths replay from about 2013 (somebody will correct me) where Souths scored twice in the last 3 minutes to win was on Fox during the week. Do you think if the score was 30-4 or 44-16 or 50-10 that anybody would remember that game?

I’d say a few. Post 2021 to now was better than this year

Are you talking pre when we lost the years or lower grades or since then?

Wait until 2 more teams get added and the playing stocks are even more stretched than now.

There are some bums playing and coaching in this comp

It was an aggressive attacking off load.
Then a great defensive play in the intercept. Then a good run after the interception.
Then a good cover tackle.
Then a blunder from the winger (a headsdown play all about structure rather than what was in front of him).
Then another a good defensive play to pick it up from marker and return it.

I cannot even remember the plodder plays that must be the type of play you like in the game.

They certainly didn't make the 10 minute highlights package.

Which makes expansion ridiculous doesn’t it? Which makes rules increasing the likelihood of blowouts even more ridiculous, doesn’t it?

I posted the last year to this year's numbers. Almost identical

I will go and look at 24 and 23 too but it either rains early on and we get drop fests or we get lots of points

Did we have a bad semi final game last year? Dogs v Penrith was the only one. Even that was a Panthers master class
