In football/ soccer, i checked the scores in the champions league round of 16 knockout phase where apparently the best teams in Europe are up against each other. Maybe the refs are applying their own version of a 6 again rule:

Atletico Madrid 5
Tottenham 2

Atalanta 1
Bayern 6

PSG 5
Chelsea 2

Bodo/Glimt 3
Sporting 0

Real Madrid 3
Man City 0

Sporting 5
Bodo/ Glimt 0 (2nd leg)

Chelsea 0
PSG 3 (2nd leg)

Barcelona 7
Newcastle 2 (2nd leg)

Liverpool 4
Galatasaray 0 (2nd leg)

Bayern 4
Atalanta 1 (2nd leg)

That's because it's not the champion's league. It's the top 4 league. Calling it champion's league doesn't mean the teams in there are any good.

So you want to back to games with 17 penalties a game? And there is no flow?

Why would you think I want that? It's your dumbarse mate tboon who suggested he wanted to make set restarts challengeable. How do you think that'd work without a stoppage in play, or in other words, a penalty?

Pvls two major missteps have been stadiums and the tv deal

Both afl and league took cuts during covid but Pvl stupidly signed a long term deal at Covid prices whilst the afl has effectively done two deals since then

I think he will deliver this time he knows he stuffed it up last time

On stadiums there needs to be a longer term policy on Canberra, nsw (brookvale, gong, Campbelltown and Newcastle) and Brisbane

Canberra and brookvale being the most urgent

Pvl has singled out ruck speed as an important statistic

He believes faster ruck speed means better games
Thats why every one hated Super League comp in 1997

I have not heard him quote ruck speed yet. Annesley might though as a old SL period ref

He is directly quoted as increasing "ball in play" stat makes RL better than RU and NFL

Quality isn’t what is happening now

Still the storm and Penrith have adapted to the new rules which shows good teams will always keep up whilst the losers struggle

Can’t believe Penriths defence in what is basically a touch football comp
6 again rule changed suited the Penrith style of play. Ie when they won 4 comps

So not surprised they were first to adapt

It’s hard to explain why though.
One problem with rucks/speed being so important to the outcome of games is that they are also a boring part of the sport. I try to watch games to keep an eye on the rucks and I lose interest after about 2 minutes. I don’t know how the refs keep watching them.

Aren't you on the side of 6 agains are bad?

We either have 6 agains, and find the right mix, maybe we go back to 10 interchanges to help defence

Or we go back to the messy penalty games we had.

That is the options

It has nothing to do with who it suits.

How much change have those sides had off the field?

Justin Horo summed it up perfectly the other week.

Sides that are settled aren't working on shape and setup, they can then take the step to work on the rules.

Sharks
Storm
Bulldogs now

Have also adapted well to the changes so far. Which goes with that

Yes. You said they should be challengeable. To challenge you need a stoppage in play. That's called a penalty. You reinvented penal
Captains should be able to challenge a 6again. That does then turn that particular 6again into a stoppage so in the event the challenge fails make it a penalty that they can kick for touch or goal and they lose one of their 2 captains challenges (I would up it to 2 challengers). This is the way to go.

COWBOYS GET EXPLANATION FROM REFEREES
Payten said his coaching staff sought clarity from officials after the Cowboys were penalised off the park in round 2.
“I had some dialogue with the referees through the week and they’ve been given directives to stamp their authority on the game in the first 15 minutes, with setting the tone, with the speed of the ruck, and what they want,” Payten said.
