Willie Peters wins race to coach PNG Chiefs

Premiership-winning Hull KR coach Willie Peters is poised to become the inaugural coach of the PNG Chiefs.
Peters is yet to sign a contract, but is the preferred candidate and has told his players of his intention to take on the role. The former Dragons and Rabbitohs halfback has pipped Brad Arthur, Jason Demetriou, and Adrian Lam for the job at the team that will enter the NRL in 2028.

Peters has been considered the next NRL coach-in-waiting after taking Hull KR to the last two Super League grand finals, winning the 2025 decider against Wigan. The 47-year-old further enhanced his credentials with his role as assistant Kangaroos coach and a World Club Challenge win against Michael Maguire’s Brisbane Broncos in February.
The Australian Rugby League Commission decided Peters is their pick for the Chiefs role, and only a breakdown in contract talks would result in him not getting the job.

Michael Carayannis

World club championship winning coach Willie Peters is expected to be announced as the first coach of the PNG Chiefs.
It is understood Peters has told his players and staff at Hull KR in the UK of his impending move.
The ARLC Commission met this week to green light Peters’ appointment.
Whilst talks are ongoing it is expected Peters had landed the gig with only a breakdown in contract talks preventing him from taking on the job.

The former South Sydney and St George Illawarra halfback beat out the likes of Brad Arthur, Adrian Lam and Jason Demetriou for the job.
It will be his first head coaching job in the NRL. The Australian assistant coach will start with PNG with his commitments when Hull KR finish at the end of the season.

Well the wa govt refused to pay a license fee or any money going directly to the club

3 million per club is a small price to pay for a lifetime of tax free dollars lol
$20mill govt funding is going directly to the clubs start up costs.

not trying to undersell west aussie government contributions to rugby league in general as it's great but you've missed the mark cob

grassroots in nrlwa not directly tied to perth bears funding,
match day support is more for venues, venues get the bulk $$ back from selling games and having people come through the gate
your literal quote regarding malaga high performance $20m states it is SHARED with rugby union. it's not a bears exclusive.
the WACA was getting revamped anyways.. works happening there before Bears even granted license. its a temp home.

west aussie gov investment into RL = awesome
west aussie gov investment into Bears specifically = not that much cob and thats OK, NRL are pumping funds into the NRL team.

it was later announced $12.9mill would be spent on sports facilities at waca and which bears will use in interim

What does Willie Peters’ PNG appointment mean for NRL coaching market?

Peter Maniaty
There are multiple reports Hull KR’s Australian head coach Willie Peters has won the race to become the inaugural head coach of the PNG Chiefs.

According to the Sydney Morning Herald Peters has told his players of his intention to take on the PNG role, beating a trio of fellow Australians also currently coaching in England—Brad Arthur, Jason Demetriou and Adrian Lam.
Following considerable success in the Super League in recent years, it was widely accepted Peters would soon make his way into NRL coaching. The only questions being when and with which club?

Now it seems we know the answers to both.

Coming at a time when several current NRL coaches are under increasing pressure to justify and retain their jobs, Peters’ looming appointment inevitably reshapes the wider NRL coaching landscape in 2027 and beyond.

First and foremost, his appointment is a huge coup for Chiefs CEO Lorna McPherson and GM Michael Chammas as the club prepares to become the NRL’s 19th franchise in 2028.

At just 47, Peters is a highly regarded senior coach still very much on the rise, bringing instant credibility and profile to the PNG program as it seeks to establish itself as an NRL force and attract a premiership calibre playing roster when it goes to market from November 1 this year.

Looking beyond the Chiefs, Peters’ signing removes one of the game’s most compelling coaching candidates from the talent pool, thus squeezing options for clubs like Manly, North Queensland and potentially even the Dragons who could all be in the market for a new head coach by season’s end.

Despite missing the PNG job, the stocks of experienced NRL mentors such as Brad Arthur and Jason Demetriou have instantly risen.

Kevin Walters may also find himself in high demand, particularly if the Cowboys job was to become available, potentially working alongside his former assistant at the Brisbane Broncos Ben Te’o.

Assistants Dean Young and Michael Ennis will also no doubt watching on closely should things continue to head south at the Dragons in 2026.

Whatever happens next, the annual NRL merry-go-round is gaining momentum.

Where it stops, nobody knows. But we do know one leading candidate is now out.

Going to be interesting to see how kr go after this. PNG can start signing players as of Nov .. and if you're the coach, that's gotta be taking some serious space in your head.
Perth have been slow out of the gate signing players, their preparation leading into the Nov window was clearly underdone.
Hopefully PNG doesn't make the same mistake, they need to have all their homework and offers ready to table for the first day they're allowed to sign players!
Hopefully Willys current commitments don't interfere too much with what's required in his next role.

lol, it’s not fact its his usua ill Informed bs.
Wa giovt has committed to the NRL $60mill. $35 mill for grassroots development and $25mill for club start up. That’s the facts.

then there’s $5.6mill game day support (promotion, free public transport and stadium rental)
$20mill Malaga sports complex for training facilities alongside union
$12.9mill for sport facilities at east perth which the club will use in interim until Malaga is ready.

thats the facts!

even his post blatantly stated Malaga is for dual usage with another code and franchise…
Even the waca facilities were always gonna be upgraded regardless.. bears force just tenants in a government owned asset..

the game day support is for the stadium and stadium asset management to recoup costs of usage… you know that government own.

grassroots development is exactly for that. Rugby league in general and NRLWA. No different to QRL or nswrl investing into regions. It doesn’t go directly to the nrl clubs. Lol

perthwrongs, ding dong. Doesn’t even know the set up for rugby league in his own adopted state. Clueless as usual. Sad for 60 year old man to be that stupid
