Parramatta Eels star Mitch Moses sent official NRL warning over treatment of referee Peter Gough

Parramatta Eels star Mitchell Moses has been sent an official warning letter by the NRL over his on-field antics towards referee Peter Gough in their dramatic golden point loss to the Wests Tigers.

Parramatta halfback Mitchell Moses has been sent a warning letter by the NRL about his on-field antics towards match officials.
The NRL is aware Moses touched referee Peter Gough three times during Monday’s high-intensity golden point thriller against Wests Tigers.

NRL management issued Moses with a ‘concerning act notice’ around his general manner and demeanour towards referees throughout the season.

There are also some trepidation at the NRL around the regularity of Moses’ approaching match officials, sometimes slightly aggressively.

The NRL has been monitoring Moses’ constantly questioning around on-field decisions. The letter, issued by the game’s Match Review Committee, is a level below a judiciary charge.

It equates to a severe reprimand.

While none of the three moments where Moses placed his hands on Gough during Monday’s match were deemed aggressive, the NRL maintains a strict “no contract” edict with match officials.

NRL management has warned players could be breached through any form of contact with match officials, whether it be minor, friendly or accidental.

Moses twice handled Gough – on the back and right arm – when Eels centre Sean Russell was concussed after a tackle with Wests Tigers opposite Heamasi Makasini in the 28th minute.

Gough told Moses on-field that Russell “actually rushes out of the line” and “he’s not control himself. There’s a duty of care there not to make high contact (so) it will be penalty against Sean Russell. We have had them in the past like that.”

Moses replied: “I’ve never heard that, head-on-head contact.”

The Eels star then touched Gough’s right arm again as players were leaving the field at halftime.

Multiple players in recent history have been punished for making contact with a match official including Sam McKendry, Dylan Brown, Sam Moa, Heath Mason, William Kennedy, Tyson Frizell, Harry Grant, Steve Matai and Jahrome Hughes.

Moses engaged in several on-field discussions throughout the CommBank Stadium match.

One drama between Moses and Gough occurred in the first half when the Eels playmaker was essentially denied a captain’s challenge when the referee ruled a loose carry, rather than strip, when Eels forwards Jack Williams was in possession.

On-field, Moses said to Gough: “He was held and getting up to play the ball. I want to challenge that.”

Gough replied: “I hadn’t ruled the tackle complete, it’s a lost ball.”

Post-game, Moses said: “(Williams) felt like he was held and had about four players on him so he’s tried to get up and play the ball.

“And then a bloke has come flying in so I asked to challenge it and he (Gough) said he hadn’t called held yet. So there was no point in me challenging it because I was never going to win it. I don’t know.

“He pretty much told me not to challenge it because he told me he hadn’t said held. There was no way I was going to win that. But it’s not why we lost.”

Eels coach Jason Ryles added: “(Referees) have a hard job. They get put in some pretty high pressure situations.”

I think you guys deserved the win, all thoughts aside - but the way it was won (not your fault) leaves a sour taste in my mouth.

This ref was pathetic.
Actually the way it was won (in GP) was the least of the problems. Walker was >5m offside and Madden missed the FG because of the Walker pressure. Its a clear penalty and really had to be given (Tigers lost a GP game the same way), but there were obviously a lot of other decisions that were rubbish or contentious (both ways IMO).

For mine, its not just that the ref was pathetic, I actually think its more like it is the NRL approach. A lot of the decisions that appear ridiculous are actually completely consistent with the current NRL application of the rules. Unfortunately.

Im genuinely not rubbing it in your guys faces. It was a very tough loss to cop (Ive been there many times) and Parra were very toughand brave under the cicumstances.

FWIW, IMO if the Simmonson injury doesnt happen Tigers win by 13+, but it did happen.

Eels boss Jim Sarantinos accelerates push for salary cap relief from NRL over foul play injuries

Three high-profile Eels players will combine for 49 games spent out injured as a result of foul play, while the culprits will miss just six. It’s set to spark talks with NRL over salary cap dispensation.

Parramatta chief executive Jim Sarantinos is set to accelerate talks with the NRL over salary cap dispensation for players sidelined by foul play after the devastating loss of Bailey Simonsson on Easter Monday.
Sarantinos confirmed he planned to open formal discussions with head office over the concept given winger’s absence comes hot on the heels of injuries to J’maine Hopgood and Isaiah Iongi.

The Eels now have three high-profile players sidelined for extended periods as a direct result of foul play.

“We haven’t had that direct conversation with the NRL yet but I will be,” Sarantinos said.

“We have had a stack of injuries and some of them have been accidents. But the reality is we have lost J’maine Hopgood, Bailey Simonsson and Isaiah Iongi – we have players who are going to miss 49 games through acts of foul play.

“The opposition are going to lose players for six games suspension in total. It’s one thing to lose a player where there’s no foul play involved.

“It’s another thing for J’maine Hopgood to do his ACL when he cops a hip drop. We can’t replace those players unless we promote development players or train-and-trial players.

“If we had salary cap and roster spot dispensation it would give us the scope to explore other opportunities. It’s something I think the NRL needs to look at and we will be talking to them about it.”

Simonsson is expected to be sidelined for an extended period after dislocating his ankle when he was tackled in mid-air by Tigers winger Luke Laulilii at CommBank Stadium on Sunday.

Hopgood and Iongi were already on the sidelines amid a frustrating injury list for coach Jason Ryles.

Immediately after his side’s golden point loss to the Tigers, Ryles said the idea of cap dispensation was worth discussing.

“Surely I think it’d be something worth considering,” Ryles said.

“Foul play, season-ending injury, there should possibly be something. I think common sense would prevail.

“I’m not sure exactly how that works. I asked our GM last week and he’s going to follow that up. That’s above my pay grade.

“The players don’t actually mean to do it. We understand that, but there’s a reason those actions are outlawed, because of what we’re going through now.”

I actually don't even think Simmonson scores at least one of those tries if he was still on the field.

Twidle has that extra yard of pace that Simmonson doesn't have & i reckon it made the difference in the end.

The golden point penalty was fine - the penalty which ties the game up was a stitch up.

Have you ever watched a game? Seriously?
I was at the game, up the other end of the field, so I saw it on the big screen.
he never touched his head or neck and he came down behind him holding him.

It looked like a neck injury to you at first? His foot pointing at his arse didn't distract you?
I was looking at the point of contact.
He clearly talked him in mid air, its clearly a penalty. I could understand the argument that if he isnt tackling him, holding him, he doesnt land like that and the injury doesnt happen. A horrible accident.
For sure.

Was pretty harsh I think but if you are going to make the point that the Moses penalty prior was "technically" a penalty because of contact with the head, the second one is the same. For mine, neither should have been a penalty.

Both penalties except Tuivati was called for our one when it was actually TDS, and fact is ref didn’t even see the one on Moses. Certainly throws up the possibility of what else he didn’t see

Do we think we could have handled the Lomax situation differently in hindsight?

Joey Manu is bound to come back and most likely to play fullback with the injuries we have he would be a great replacement now..

We could have traded lomax to the storm for the NRL helping us get Manu to the club for this year atleast..

Yep. Dunno about Manu but in hindsight we should have told Lomax he can only go once we have a suitable replacement. Or any replacement.

The Moses penalty was ridiculous - but least there was "contact" with the head, as stupid as it was.

Regardless - the right team won.

It's just that it feels like that ref did his best to make sure of that, rather than let the 34 warriors determine that.

But kudos on a gutsy win - that right-side edge forward of yours is a real gem.
