It's worth more because it's bigger, not because the average person within it is richer.

South Australia regional population outside Adelaide is merely 500,000. Queensland's outside SEQ is 1.5 million. NSW/ACT's regional population is 3 million.

But the average person of the 1.2 million that live in Adelaide has more disposable income than the average person of the 4.2 million who lives in regional Qld, NSW or Canberra. The size of the market as it is relevant to TV advertisers is not the 27% that the population would imply. It's more like 35%, 40%, something like that.

Again, this should be pretty straightforwaed demographics. We have census data that proves all this stuff.
Regional areas may have slightly lower wages on average than metro areas, but housing is far cheaper. Disposable incomes are effectively no worse than metro areas, and in some cases higher.

Even besides me working in the industry, it isn't wrong to make an assumption about this. There is public data on all this. You can go onto the census website and see what people report about their incomes in Adelaide vs Newcastle. It's the census. It's accurate. We can safely assume that advertising rates are worth more in a city where people's household incomes are higher.

so what is it then ?

I don’t make assumptions

There is little difference in the cost of a house Adelaide v Newcastle

Newcastle people are just dumb country hicks without two bob to rub together , whilst they are all millionaires in Adelaide …
If the whole point of this discussion is to compare AFL and NRL, their media rights are thin margins. Similar amounts, whoever has more in a given year will only have a few percentage points more than the other.

The margins between Adelaide and Newcastle is not millionaires and hicks, but it is enough to make a difference when compared to the thin margins being discussed in the overall media rights deals.

This is a very fair point. But that's also the demand side. There's also the supply side. I made the earlier point about people competing for limited ad slots. There are more competing car dealerships in Adelaide, but fewer in Rockhampton.

the whole discussion you and I are having is around why the NRL FTA rights are undervalued .., that isn’t solely about what the AFL get paid

I wouldn’t mind betting the median wage in Newcastle is higher than Adelaide.

Do sadelaide get local car dealers advertising during the footy? You really don’t think regional markets get the same national hilux ads as Syd & Brisbane?

Chat GPT telling me there is little difference in average housing prices between the two markets
So you consider ChatGPT a reliable information source? I asked it which is Australia's number one football code and this was the response:

There isn’t a single, clear “number one” football code across all of Australia—it depends on how you measure popularity (attendance, TV ratings, participation, or regional support). But overall, Australian Football League (AFL)—the top level of Australian rules football—is generally considered the dominant football code nationally.

Now ask it how to talk to girls.

2021 census data

For the 348,539 population Urban Centre of Newcastle

$1,708 median household income

For the 1,387,290 population of Greater Adelaide (includes Adelaide Hills and other outer suburbs)

$1,548 median household income

Though there are 2.4 people per households in Newcastle and 2.5 in Adelaide, and there are some cases where treating a household as one purchasing unit is not always appropriate (sharehousing). But also, we shouldn't count children who do not have income to spend.

You're completely right, my apologies.

I should stop being so sanctimonious, I could learn a thing or two!
