Tim Smith Gornnn?

Parramatta halfback Tim Smith is expected to be stood down from Friday's NRL clash with Manly after failing to turn up to training this morning.
The Eels have called a media conference for 2pm today where Eels chief executive Denis Fitzgerald will front alongside Smith and his manager David Riolo.

Smith has a long history of misdemeanours at the NRL club involving alcohol and spent part of the preseason in a rehabilitation clinic on the Gold Coast.
He has also suffered from depression and arrived at the club around 11am today with his manager, two hours after the scheduled morning session.

Eels coach Michael Hagan was due to speak to the media following the session but cancelled at the last minute after noting Smith's absence.
Smith has played just three NRL games this year in his comeback from shoulder surgery and has copped the brunt of the criticism for the Eels successive losses.

But his teammates have stood behind him, with halves partner Brett Finch sympathising with the 23-year-old over the ongoing criticism.
"The continual criticism, I've had it myself in my career and it certainly gets you down and you get sick of hearing it," said Finch prior to training today.
"I thought (Smith) played pretty well on the weekend. I thought his kicking game was strong.
"I feel sorry for him because I know what he is going through, you certainly don't like to see your teammates cop that criticism all the time."

Pretty sad, if he gets his act together he could have a pretty special career, a wasted talent so far.

Yes, is sad. Hope he gets plenty of personal and professional support.

Think this will force their hand on trying to resign Finch as well.

i heard on FSN just then he was diagnosed with bipolar...cut the guy some slack at least it was his decision now to take some time off and deal with his problems. They obviously come before footy.

Good luck to the bloke, but remind us again why he came back so soon. Hopefully he gets his stuff sorted out and hopefully he stays on in some capacity at the club.

bi-polar must be contagious... seems to favour the halfback gene too.

An average of 1 in 6 people have it but only 20% of people know they have it. Depression affects 50% of Australians, it is the most underdiagnosed diseased in the world.

Next time, get a clue.

Most Eels fans have pretty much summed up the sadness from our fans as a result of this in our forum, but I'd just like to throw up the trial by media aspect in this whole circus. Timmy has acted out a bit, there's no denying that, but the treatment he has received from the media over the past two years has been disgusting and completely out of proportion to his misdemeanors. The worst part is that no one will be held accountable, and like him or not, it's a sad thing to see him go out this way as a result of the things that papers and other mouthpieces have said about him.

Baz, you have a point to a certain degree. However, Smith didn't help himself. By continually stuffing up chances upon chances the media will jump on that. To be honest as a sport having off field distractions is not a good look. That said I hope he sorts his stuff out, and comes back in 2009 as a better player. However, I hope he doesn't go to Parra as frankly I think he needs a change of scenery.

my late best mate had bipolar, along with several of my relatives. i have a clue. it was a joke - plain and simple.

swallow some concrete and harden the f**k up princess. us knights fans copped enough sh*t - and in pretty good spirit - over the joE incident.

I hope he does return to Parra...and does'nt end up elsewhere, for example Souths or Manly.
