Brett Kenny would dominate any 5/8 they name.

I second that. The problem with having Lewis in the team is that although he deserves to be an immortal, due to his stature in Queensland, he is NOT a better 5/8 than Kenny. No one is.

I find it almost impossible to have any sensible input into a team of the century cos all I know of is footy since about 1980

LOL at the thought of Strider having "sensible input" ...

Kenny wont get picked - he should but he wont!

Wally only had to get up for 3 big games a year so wasn't hard to look good. He couldn't make the side on the 82 roo tour - immortal?? Give me a break !

I think Messenger would be a token member due to his part in getting our game up and running and for that he is already recognised and rightly so.

Lewis had aura but Kenny was a wizard. I mean he is one of the reasons i started following this club. His football was magical in the 80s.

So the Tele don't think anyone from the 80's Eels side would make the top 17????? Seriously, one of them should surely make it!!!!

Lazo and Walters  And how doe's Wally get in ahead of Fulton??? only played 3 games every season while the likes of Bert was playing week in week out in the toughest comp in the world. And when he did play in the NWSRL he wasn't that special.

the only genuine chance would be Guru senior but it appaears that accolade will go to a guy who spent most of his career in England.

That would be the one......

I think quite a few of the players from the Eels side during the Eighties would personally be embarassed if they were picked. The only genuine selection would be Sterling at halfback (IMO Sterling and Billy Smith are both much better selections in terms of their career records rather than the media build up that surrounded both Johns and Wally Lewis - Andrew Johns is a great player but certainly not the greatest I have seen) - but ahead of Billy Smith would be a big ask. I know people rave about Johns but this record IMO is pretty hard to go past.

In all, Billy Smith played 229 first grade games scoring 30 tries, 24 goals and 23 field goals (161 points). He represented NSW 15 times in 1964, 65, 67, 68, 69, 71 & 1973. He played 18 Tests for Australia in 1964-68 & 1970. He played in six grand finals 1963-66, 1971 & 1975, winning on four occasions. He twice won the Harry Sunderland Medal for best Australian player in an Ashes series. Following a smashed jaw in 1969, he came back to captain Australia in the 1970 World Cup.
