Who's De Gabreille?

I thought Bruce Gordon (14th richest aussie) was backing the bid?

It's good to see Wollongong/Illawarra isn't being completely left out in the open. If they can put together a good bid - I'd rather have them on board than North Queensland.

It makes sense that a new side gun for the best coach in the league. Gary's work in resurrecting and rebuilding Newcastle was stellar, and if he can repeat the feat and make us competitive again this year - he'll cement himself as the most successful coach in A-League history.

Two years at the club. One final win, one penalty loss in a major semi final. I'll grant you McKinna has made two deciders and every finals series - but he's also not won a major one. Merrick's had one good year. Nobody else has been coaching long enough to compete.

FOOTBALL Federation Australia has received 10 expressions of interest to obtain a licence for a new A-League football club.
The proposals came from western Sydney, Wollongong, Melbourne, the Gold Coast and Townsville and the amount of interest proved a great boost for the FFA.

"The number of proposals we have received reflects the momentum behind the growth and development of the Hyundai A-League," said FFA CEO, Ben Buckley.
Buckley said FFA had received a new bid from a leading Gold Coast businessman, Clive Palmer.

"We will now start exclusive negotiations with Mr Palmer’s consortium, Gold Coast United."

Buckley also said FFA was in active discussions with two consortia interested in a Townsville-based A-League club - led by Melbourne businesswoman Milissa Fischer, and local businessman Don Matheson.

"We are having further discussions with both Ms Fischer’s and Mr Matheson’s groups and we expect to be entering into exclusive negotiations with one of them by the end of this month," Buckley said.

Other proposals received included three seeking the second Melbourne license, two groups vying for the western Sydney license and one covering Wollongong and the New South Wales south coast.

The FFA A-League expansion sub-committee will consider the Melbourne, western Sydney and Wollongong proposals further, and will determine a process and timeframe to award further licenses.

"We are very encouraged with the level of interest in the Hyundai A-League," Buckley said.

"Since it commenced three years ago, it has had 'cut through' in the busy Australian sporting landscape with average crowds, viewership, membership, media coverage and profitability trending upwards each season.

"The attractiveness of the competition is clearly reflected in the level of interest in the additional licenses."

FFA's view is that the A-League has the capacity to be at least a 12 team competition.

Gold Coast United is a good name. I hope they get the side, not the other bloke's team.

West Sydney or Wollongong should get a license.

Sydney don't really need a new team while:
a). They're failing to adequately support the one they have
b). Wollongong, Canberra, Townsville, and the Gold Coast are not represented

a) Sydney is not western sydney. Sydney FC is not western Sydney's team.

b) western sydney is the most culturally diverse regions in australia and has produced more socceroos than any other region.

c) Sydney derbies would be massive

what i meant is that the a-league barely has any history.

but in the short history of the a-league, he is by far the best coach. :D

Wollongong and Western Sydney need a license...the two homelands of Football in our country before the A-League kicked in, still are imo.

However atm Sydney FC doesn't have enough backing for a second Sydney team, the FFA should put it out that Western Sydeny supporters need to get behind Sydney FC, if Sydney has enough backing then by all means we NEED a WS team.

For now I reckon Gold Coast, Wollongong personally. But obviously the FFA are trying to rub out the heartland of football and want a Townsville team...

It could be if Sydney FC made an effort to play games out there and get involved with the region. Last I checked, western Sydney was still Sydney. Goes against the whole 'one town, one team' thing to reward Western Sydney for being too lazy to support the team they already have.
