NRL investigating games over 3 X 30 minute periods

Mate, all they are suggesting is a 10 minute longer game split into thirds, rather than halves.

Personally I like the idea AS LONG as they bar the trainers from living behind the defensive line.
If a coach gets to speak to his players twice in a game (ie at the first break, and the second break) then those guys with water bottles aren't needed unless a player is lying on the ground and out of the play (which of course could be faked...)

I also think they need to have 'time off' for a kick at goal, but a 1 minute shot clock on it - count it down on the big screen, and if you take longer than a minute, no points count.
but why mess with the simpleness of our game that makes it appeal to soo many?

league is at its best when played in 2x 40min halves.

if anything, reduce the interchange to 6 so fatigue is more of a factor.
please just dont go changing the game any more.

how would they work the changing of ends if the game is played in thirds?? a team would get a definate advantage if there was some sort of wind behind the back of one side of the field.

How do you know that when you've never seen it in any other format at a professional level?

Lets play the game in 80 x 1 minute periods. We can have 79 x 10 min breaks between each set of 6 to maximise revenue!

I'm not gonna pretend to know if this is a good or bad idea.

But nobody can call this the 'working-class mans game' anymore.

the players who think rugby league is a job should boot off to france with sonny.

its not a job, appreciate you play a sport you love for a living. god forbid you have to REALLY WORK for a living.

This isn't just a local park footy match they rock up for on weekends then head to the pub.

There is a hell of a lot of training and pressure involved in being an NRL player.

indeed... they train hard all week. their contracts arn't just payment for match appearances... but all the training.. promotion.. and whatever else comes with it. people who think it's an "easy" job are deluded.

The idea of four quarters to fit more ads in is nothing new. They did it in the early 70s in the Amco Cup.

But I don't think we need to go down that road. As I've been saying for a while all we need to do is have an out of play clock so that the clock stops whenever it goes out of play and we have 30 seconds to show an ad.

People's first reaction will be no way, but stop and think about it. When the ball goes out of play we have 20 odd seconds of dead time anyway. May as well make it 30 and make some money out of it. On the plus side we get more actual game time, and we would never miss the first tackle after a kick off ever again.

Its one thing to tinker with rules, but to change the entire structure of a game in order to appease TV contractors? Thats just suicide

It's a blow to credibility as a legitimate sporting competition. RL has no aversion to evolution like yawnion, but something like this would have to be handed down from the top and impact all RL matches worldwide.

If they want to show ads in live games why don't they just put picture in picture for breaks in games like goal kicks and even scrums. With all the garbage that goes on in scrums these days if they ran one ad while the scrum was shown in the top corner the ad would be over before the scrum. I wouldn't complain, maybe others would but if it doubled the amount of ads they could put in the games then it could double the revenue then I think most people would understand.

How about addressing the problem that is starting to make rugby league a tad boring at times- wrestling. That will bring the fans back.

I for one disagree with it.

* As mentioned running with the wind is an advantage. 1 x team would have an unfair advantage
* Change for the sake of change I say. Lets keep some tradition.
* Longer broadcasts aren't something as a busy family man that I want. (Means tying up & gagging the kids for longer)
* Ice Hockey is played in this format (IIRC) - We have enough US influence.
* Will kill the post match interview with players - How can the bring out the old chest nut "Yeah ... ahhh.. it really was a game of two halves...oops Imean two thirds..ahhh bugger .. I mean a game of three thirds"

I'm not sure about the 3 x 30 minute scenario but as many have said, but at least its an idea ... something is being put forward !

I think "griff's" post above has a lot of merit also. There are quite a few things slowing the game down that need to be fixed imho.

The above post - yes !
Shot clocks - yes !
Video ref checking for a strip and other general play matters (except send-offs) - get rid of them !
Less Interchanges - yes !

The annual coaches conference should be moved forward to the day after the GF, whoever puts the rules in stone get in there also - (Annesley and friends ?), lock them all up, and don't let them out till they improve the product

This is the route I'd go down to improve the game for starters

Oink !
