Why is it called the Dally M and not the Dally Messenger award? How dumb would it sound if they came up with an award called the Wally L or Andrew J? It's like some US Basketball nickname.

Because "Dally M" is the nickname the fans, team mates and media has used for Dally Messenger since 1908.

The origin of "Dally M" - it was commonplace for Sydney newspapers in the early 1900s to refer to well known people with just the initial of their surname. In Messenger's case, it's use out-lasted everyone else.

"Dally M" was also used as a brand name on Messenger branded footballs and football boots, from the early 1910s right through until the 1960s. The "Dally M" tag is something instantly and uniquely identified with rugby league.

like how come the player voted the best in the NRL cannot even get a game for NSW ?

if we were picking an Aussie team shouldn't the Dally M winner be the first player picked ?
