Storm co-operation with AFL clubs

With the new stadium coming online in 2010, the Storm's got to look at some ways to quickly increase their crowd numbers to expose themselves to as many people in Melbourne as possible.

This will increase the number of people who will go to games in the medium-turn future and also make sure they don't get 10K in a 30K stadium and look crap.

There has been some co-operation between the Storm and the Melbourne Demons AFL club, so what would happen if this association went a bit further for the benefit of both clubs? Here's my plan.

Demons and Storm should enter into an agreement that for a select number of games, Storm members get x% off a ticket to a Demons home game and vice verca for the Demons members.

This would obviously be for the lower-drawing games for both teams to ensure that the teams' fans are not impeded in going to games.

This would do wonders for the Storm's averages, because Demons fans may think, "my team's not playing at home this weekend, so I may as well go to this other game because I can get in cheaper."

Your thoughts?

Well, Newcastle, Parra and the Gold Coast are/have worked across codes before. Sounds like a good idea to me.

melbourne victory will be using that ground as well -
so maybe do a season deal thingy to the new ground

one pass will get you a seat to all the storm and the victory games, and will cost less than buying the season tickets separately

The Melbourne Demons are just about the least popular AFL club in the city. It'd be more sensible to strike up such a deal with a club that at least has one of the bigger support bases.

This sort of thing is already being done. It's called TEAMelbourne, it started about 2 years ago and incorporates the Storm, Melbourne football club, Melbourne Tigers basketball club, The Melbourne Vixens netball team and the Melbourne racing club which is basically Caulfield race track. The Victory were asked to join as well but their misguided self importance didn't allow them to join such a venture.

I'm pretty sure being a member gets you discounts to all of the above teams games as well as to the races.

As Ice mentioned, there is already that association there, and it has been quite useful for League in Melbourne when it has come to moving Test and Origin tickets down south.

The problem with the Storm doing much more in the short term to raise interest in them, is they have no room to crowd at Olympic Park. The match against the Warriors was official capacity at Olympic Park... 15.5K...

If you look at the Storm season they pushed that capacity quota around 5 times so there is definitely the support for them down there.

So looking at the Storm's membership, they already have 7K worth of ticketed members, and another 5K of members who live in Melbourne but haven't bought ticketed packages. I'm sure when they move to their new venue a large portion of that over 5K will purchase ticketed memberships.

I think most Storm fans know of other people who follow the Storm who don't attend as many matches as they could or would like to because of the terrible conditions of Olympic Park. 2010 is the perfect time for the Storm to convert those people into regular fans.

But yeah I don't know if there is a huge amount the Storm can afford to do next season simply because they have no where to put their fans, unless of course they take a handful of games to the Telstra Dome.

I've never heard of the Melbourne Demons - but that TeamMelbourne membership is a great idea.

9 won't show games in Melbourne until they either:

a) get good ratings
b) get good crowds

Both show whether or not a team has a following. As the first one isn't going to happen when games are at midnight, the second is the logical thing to focus on.

Big crowds can make a sport look more popular than it is.

Arguably the Dees demography is a good AFL target choice, and they suck at the moment on and off field.

and they are the AFL team most likely to either die or relocate. All their supporters are 50 years or older (they have the oldest supporter base in the AFL), their financial situation is poor at best and they are arguably the worst AFL team in the past decade.

Richmond is nearby and they never make the finals. Plus, they have more supporters than many clubs so that means more exposure.

Maybe the Storm should stop co operating with the AFL and start co operating with the NRL. Get the dirty grapple & chicken wing tackling out of your game

its risky to buddy up with just 1 club because they could alienate all other supporters of afl clubs.,..

they should work with all for deals with tickets
