I love rugby league and I know you guys have good intentions but seriously how can you defend this mediocrity? The rugby league "world cup" is a joke.
What was wrong with the Tri nations? They really need to grow international league before they try anything like this.

No it isn't.

France play rugby league and have done so for years - I want to see them run around, especially with many of their players fully professional these days.

Same with PNG (where RL is the national sport). RL has a good profile in Fiji as well.

With such a high influx of Polynesians in the NRL and ESL, it makes sense to see Tonga and Samoa in there.

Ireland and Scotland are so-so, but really Wales should be there instead.

It's an another exciting tier for RL fans to enjoy and "World Cup's and International Cups" are a way of boosting the smaller nations.

I just dont get this talk, Wales wernt bloody good enough to qualify, there is an arguament to suggest they should be Auto qualifiers but since their league structure is not even on the same planet as the 5 Automatic qualifiers I dont see why what a completly different side did 8 years ago should be a reason why they should qualify, If they were good enough they would have beaten Scotland and qualified on merit, Scotland deserve their place, end of.

Fair enough.

So how do we grow the international game by only ever having the same 3 nations compete?

No doubt we will have negative nellies wondering why we should bother putting on a great quality tournament that makes millions to expand the game - so why don't we try to keep it all in this thread.

The tri nations is a good event.
It generates a lot of money for the game, and a lot of it goes straight to keeping 'stars' in our game.
This tournament does a hell of a lot more than that.

I don't think this guy is a troll.
I think he is one of many fans of League who haven't been following the international game and don't know how far we have come in a very short time.

How can you have an international schedule without having a World Cup? it should be played more often and locked in like other sports

The World Cup will be a good yard stick to see where the developing nations currently stand against the big 3. It will also hopefully help to compare the Polynesian countries to the European countries.

Crumbs, there're loads of LU posters who never use international forum giving their opinions on the WC - as a microcosm of the RL community that shows the value of the WC (and that's before the thing's even started; I'm not even thinking about the games, the money and the legacy).

this comp has already don e its job. its educated a lot of people.

Hopefully it is the platform to get regular internationals between smaller countries and the larger ones.

This could be the turning point for IRL, or it could be another false dawn.

I guess we will know in a few months.
