Spoken like someone who doesnt live in Sydney or western sydney - but yes, Sydney is that large.
If you look at the parts of metropolitan sydney that make up western Sydney - you've got nearly 2 million people and a 150 of Australia's top 500 ASX companies.
14 local government areas, over 70 different languages. There might be a 'Sydney' team but it's not a western Sydney team, which is it's own legitimate region.
Western Sydney is also the production line of the Socceroos. It needs it's own team, the market is simply too big. It dwarfs Canberra.
I lived in Sydney for plenty of years. If Western Sydney was such an important market, they would have been included originally instead of teams in loser areas like Newcastle or the Central Coast.
And they are still covered by Sydney FC. A Canberra team would cover the ACT, the Eden-Monaro, Riverina, Southern Tablelands, South Coast and Southwest Slopes areas.
But hey, you could also choose to ignore the bush completely and put another team in a city that already has one.
