A Grade Challenge CupSunday, 06th December 2009
For decades debate has raged over just which Junior League has Sydney’s best A Grade side and thanks to the New South Wales Leagues Club the Rugby League community will soon have their answer.

The New South Wales Rugby League has today sent out nomination forms for the inaugural New South Wales Leagues Club Challenge Cup.

Entry is open to all open age (A Grade) Junior League teams within the Sydney area, subject to the endorsement of the Leagues in which nominated clubs participate (please note this excludes Bundaberg Red Cup teams).

New South Wales Rugby League Coaching and Development officer Stuart Stanton says the competition will showcase some of brilliant local talent hidden away in the open age competitions.

“During our annual conference the Junior Leagues expressed an interest in a broader competition for A Grade sides,” Stanton said.

“The aim of the competition is to promote cross borders Rugby League and to find the champion A Grade team in Sydney.

“The competition will be played in a knock out format with rounds one and two completed as pre-season matches, to allow for minimal disruption to Junior League games.

“Competition entries will be capped at 32 for 2010 with a plan for expansion to state wide competition in 2011.”

NSWRL Director and NSW Leagues Club Chief Executive, Chris Bowden, says the Leagues Club is happy to support a concept which will benefit grass roots Rugby League in New South Wales.

“I would like to commend the Junior Leagues and Stuart Stanton for coming up with this new innovation,” Mr Bowden said.

“I hope the Sydney Rugby League Community supports the new competition and that it can be expanded to include the whole state of New South Wales in the future.”

Round one of the New South Wales Leagues Club Challenge Cup will be played on March 18-21 2010 with a Grand Final to be played by the end of July.

That seems like a pretty good concept for the grass roots to me. Hopefully helps encourage participation at this level.

I reckon Belrose will be favourites. They won 15 games in succession to win the Manly comp this year and had 15 players that featured in the Jim Beam Cup in 2008 plus a couple more from the Qld Cup.

the manly comp is not overly strong, and the jim beam in 2008 were nothing special. the penrith and parramatta comps have the strongest A-grade teams. wentworthville have won the parra A-grade 6 or 7 years in a row, they would be up there with the favourites.

Hutch I have to agree, the Wenty A grade would give this a shake however, with the way the Parra Junior League is run I cant see them allowing any of their junior A grade teams to participate.

The Parra and Penrith comps have dropped in standard significantly in the last few years. I would say the Manly comp is the strongest.

The Belrose squad this year was:

Lee Cameron, Corey Forrest, James Mortimer, Andrew Needham, Brandon Scott, Tim Gee, Joe Cudmore, Shannon Cameron, Dave Marando, Mailangi Styles, Jim Curtis, Steve Carew, Matt Forrest, Peter Delaivuna, Richie Plummer, Martin Cook, Tom Bitmead, Francis Langifisi, Luke Campbell.

This side would beat Chester Hill, WA Reds and Campbelltown so they wouldnt have much trouble with Wenty A Grade even if they were eligible.

Belrose put 40 points on Asquith in the Grand Final and Asquith had players like Mark Meredith, Anthony Kiro, Rueben Enoka, Desai Gupwell, Dave Wynyard, Ben Carney, Rhian Gerard, Clinton Stowers and Ryan Wheeler.

This was taken from Parra DJRL website
LOYALTY OR CASH?

A particular Club has pushed its own agenda to the press in order to justify their own individual stance and remedy.
Over the past 30 years of “A” Grade football within this district the almighty dollar has been the catalyst towards 1st Division premiership glory, whereby the team who paid the most walked away with the trophy.
In 1990 the Junior League of the day banned payments to players, to counteract the licensed club team domination of the game and then emerged the non-licensed club teams who became ‘cashed-up’ by affluent hotels or funds received by ill-gotten gains. These underhand payments completely turned around the fortunes of the competition and there commenced a decade of premierships to previously uncrowned teams.
Come 2003, with the demise of the Metropolitan Cup and specifically the reserve grade element, the Parramatta Junior League introduced the revamped Parramatta Cup which was designed to cater for the void left by no reserve grade competition in the newly formed Jim Beam Cup. There was a re-introduction of player payments, however a salary cap type rule limited the amount payable, per team, in 1st Division to $30,000 per season.
From 2003 to 2009 the Clubs with the finance graced the 1st Division competitions and come season 2009 two past dominant teams withdrew from the top division as the past funds were not available because of financially hard times. This happening resulted in only 4 teams nominating for 1st Division and these teams ironically enough were the only 4 teams within the district who paid their players.
Once again the perils of the mighty dollar had an adverse effect on the 1st division competition.
During the 2009 season a Parramatta Junior League Club raised the issue of once again banning the payment of players, this proposal was tabled at the junior league seminar in October where Clubs voted in favour of the venture by 15 votes to 5.
This decision was ratified by the junior league board of management and payments were subsequently banned from season 2010 and beyond.
This ruling will increase the number of players in all “A” Grade competitions and simultaneously spread the player talent more proportionally to allow more teams to complete in the top division.
The Junior League has formulated a declaration for players to sign prior to their registration, stating they will not receive remuneration in any form for playing rugby league within the Parramatta District. Similarly each Club Secretary and President will also be required to sign a declaration stating the Club and others will not pay players.
Some maintain there will be a drain of players from the district to other areas with their ultimate aim to chase the dollars. We at Parramatta Junior Rugby League are confident overall of LOYALTY prevailing over CASH.
The payment of players’ problem is not restricted to Parramatta, other districts have and are experiencing the same problem where the paid teams are dominant, causing a reluctance for teams to enter the top division. The problem can be masqueraded by forming a 1st division competition with 12 or more teams whereby the teams with lesser ability share the ‘pain of defeat’ which is less frequent because there are more teams within the competition.
Currently we are examining all avenues in an endeavour to cater for all levels of “A” Grade. The best solution is to form a combined “A” Grade competition with the Penrith District which would allow the payment of players. In this regard Parramatta have four Clubs being, Cabramatta, Hills District, Mounties and Wentworthville who are prepared to join this venture however Penrith reveal only St Mary’s from their district is keen on the idea.
Bob Millward from the New South Wales Rugby League has been approached by Parramatta Junior League with the suggestion of the NSW Rugby League to make it mandatory for Bundy Cup Clubs within Parramatta and Penrith Districts to have their No.1. “A” Grade team play in the combined competition. This would add Windsor and Brothers to the competition as well as another team which has pledged its entry from outside these two districts. This would form an extremely viable 8 team competition. The first approach to Mr Millward proved fruitless and we are awaiting a reply after our second advance.
Without the Penrith teams, we are virtually assured of five 1st Division teams, which includes the outer district team. We will continue in our pursuit to formulate the best possible “A” Grade competitions to suit all of our stakeholder teams and in doing so be mindful of the need to cater for the majority and propagate the game and not heed to the demands and wants of any selfish individual clubs.

All I can say about that is, what a load of sh*te.
Mr Rose promises extra teams every year and never delivers, next year there will be 4 teams in 1st division, there will be no team from outside the district.
He approached Canterbury teams to join the comp and what happened, they immediately joined the St George comp, same as lat year, he approached the Wests A Grade team and they ran straight to group 6.

I will give you the tip, no-one wants to join the Parra comp or step up to 1st division because it is sh*t and run like a school camp by a bully dictator.

Thanks for the 30 year history lesson of the Parra A Grade you idiot but here's a hint, no-one gives a crap, they only know one thing, since Terry Rose took over Parramatta, it has gone down hill to the point where no-one wants to play in it and they are losing players left right and centre.

No payments, who cares, the pub teams will still pay and we will be back to square one.
Terry Rose has no plan, he never will have a plan cause he doesn't care.

Bring on the AFL franchise for Western Sydney, they will take over the Parra and Penrith districts within three years and by the time someone at Parra realises what has happened all of our juniors will be playing in jerseys with no sleeves.

Wenty cannot run in this competition, the article states that BRC sides cannot field a team (guess the same can be said for the NSW Cup)

So even if you field both a BRC team and an A Grade team you can't just put the A Grade team in? Sucks.

I can see those St Marys f**kwits entering this. Hope anyone but them wins.

Belrose were very strong this year. Gave the mighty berowra wallabies a touch up for sure , But in saying that no team apart from the magpies had the funds to go out and bassically buy a whole new team.

who is coaching workers ?? , he still has to stay within the 80 points in the point system.

Mate Penrith A Grade has had that for the past 2 seasons. most times last year thay had about 30 points. Now the reno's at the clubs are fixed they are bringing outside talent in to compliment the young guys from last season.

franklin 2323 so who is the coach ??

They would not have done points since its inception as they have been 2nd division since it was brought in, most players are 2 points so 17 x 2 would put them on 34 points and that is being generous.

I think it's going to be Geoff Willard.

No it's comp wide every since Doonside stacked their team in 05 (they even beat Sydney Bulls at the 7's at St Marys) with Wozinak, Hasan Saleh, Owen Cunningham etc and killed all opposition teams.

maybe it was 30 odd but it was mostly kids club juniors so it was the bare minimum

Wenty A Grade is definitely fielding a side for this pre season comp. Source, coach Dave Nugent.
The Bundy and NSW Cup sides will grade their sides over the next couple of weeks and all the players who miss the cut will have the option to stay and play in the A Grade comp with the regular lads.
