Heritage Game v Broncos

I just find it odd that people would want to celebrate mediocrity is all.

I agree.

All clubs who have not scored a Premiership in the last 10 years should be stripped of all its followers.

As of tomorrow, the following clubs will fold, and if anyone talks about them they will be banished from rugby league, nay, general sporting cricles for the enitrety (sp?) of their natural born lives:

Rabbitohs
Parramatta
Cronulla
Cowboys
Warriors
DRAGONS
Titans
Raiders

As a passionate Dragons supporter, I really cannot understand some of the dribble that its posted on this forum at times.

I make a post supporting my team, the St George Illawarra Dragons, as well as the Steelers (a legitimate part of that history even if they won no premierships and were basically sh*t for 17 years). And then it turns into a Steelers v Dragons thread. Are you guys dead set? Even though some guys on here don't like to admit it, our team is made up from TWO seperate teams who came together to form ONE team that we all support now, myself included. And surprise surprise, some of us used to be Steelers supporters. So shoot me.

I thought it was the game against Raiders. It was in 2007 and 08.

Here is a list of all the Steelers heritage games that have taken place since the merger:

2004-Against Penrith
2005-Against Brisbane
2006-Against Brisbane
2007-Against Canberra
2008-Against Canberra
2009-Against Manly

I'm assuming we'll be wearing the red tee

To all you whining sooks sitting in the corner having assumed the foetus position and thumb up to the knuckle deeply entrenched in your gob....

My rant is based at purely the purpose of celebrating such a worthless bit of sporting achievement. I'd have the same "why bother" attitude if they wheeled out the St George 88 panasonic cup side and made a big hoopla about it. Steelers bashing? Hardly. But to see such a backlash from some people really speaks volumes as to what is classed as success in sport and the recognition it deserves. Have a good hard look at yourselves lads before bringing up the old chestnut "typical saints fan bagging the steelers" when you've got nothing better to bounce back with other then that drool.

I follow English Soccer and I take a similar attitude to the FA Cup and Champions League competitions

Is the fact that there is no St George heritage day indicative of the fact that the team is really St George and the Steelers are an afterthought ??

I have splinters in my arse on this one.

I can see how some former Steelers supporters want to remember the pre-JV days with a heritage jersey event. I suspect that many of these also embrace the history of St George as their own. So I can understand Me So Hornby - someone who simply wants to support the team from an Illawarra perspective.

I can also see that we have only just begun to emerge from decade where there was an acceptance of mediocrity pervading through the culture of the club. Nothing grated on me more when wide-eyed supporters saying how great it was that we made the the top four, or even seeing something good about making the top eight. We hit rock bottom when the club chairman put a positive spin on the team finishing only 'two wins outside of the top eight', and some newbie post-JV fans accepted it without question. From an old St George fan perspective, this was as bad as it gets, and surely we don't want to ever go back there again. So I can understand Major questioning the validity of celebrating a period of underachievement.

What we have now is a club, players and supporters that are finally demanding a premiership, and that second best is simply not good enough.

We have healthy arguments and deliver a frank exchange of views, but it is our discussion to have. The trolls don't get it but they're not part of the debate.

At the end of the day, everyone is entitled to their opinion. I really don't think anyone is actively trying to insult the 'other side'. After all, we are all here to speak our minds. Right?

Thanks Willow you are indeed a wise man :D

I have no problem with the Dragons as they are now. Even myself as a former Steelers fan usually call the Dragons the Saints or St George so i'm not a whinger. And you're right I have embraced the St George side of the joint venture. I have bought numerous DVDs, books and videos on the history of St George and would be able to talk about Saints history with many old heads on this forum and hold my own. St George history IS my history now and I watch pre-joint venture footage of the Dragons and feel pride even though they weren't originally my team. The bottom line is that I have grown to love the St George Dragons and their history as much as I love them now.

The only reason I bring up the Steelers heritage game is because I supported them as a kid. I was only 7 when I first watched them play. They were my local team and I loved them as much as pre-joint venture saints fans loved St George. So its nice to have the one day of the year in which we remember the Steelers. It brings back memories of my first years of loving this great sport. So i'm sure in that respect many of you guys know exactly what i'm talking about.

See you guys friday and go the Dragons!!

We've had St George Heritage days in the past. They usually coincide with a heritage promotion the NRL are running

2004 against Manly when the NRL held 80s week
2005 against Parramatta when the NRL held 70s week
2006 against Wests Tigers when the NRL held 60s week
2007 against Cronulla when the NRL held 50s week
2009 against Canterbury the NRL heritage round
