Why little mention of the CQ NRL bid?

Should the NRL introduce two new teams

Makes you wonder how much the NRL actually know about the bids. Until two weeks ago Gallop kept lumping us as the same chance as Adelaide!

Also of the 4 bids they are a clear 3rd. Pop size, desire for the next Q'land team to share Suncorp and be Brisbane2 and stadium facilities are all big hurdles for them. Like CC you kind of get the feeling that the NRL is hoping a Sydney team might be forced to relocate there in the next couple of decades so they will keep it open as long as possible.

Gallop pledges Rocky visit

3 March 2010

From the Morning Bulletin:

NRL chief executive David Gallop has accepted an invitation to come to Central Queensland to see why the region deserves to have its own team in the top flight.

Mr Gallop has agreed to join CQ NRL Bid leader Geoff Murphy and chief executive Denis Keeffe on a tour of Queensland’s rugby league heartland.

Mr Keefe said the visit was likely in the next couple of months, once the upcoming season was under way.

The aim would be to show the most powerful man in the game how much support there was in the region for the bid.

“David Gallop is fully informed of what we’re doing here on the ground and he couldn’t be happier,” said Mr Keeffe.

The Bid team has set its sights on entering a team in the 2014 NRL and has been boosted by the news that if the bid is successful, the state government will fund a stadium.

it's more the media that never mention the bid when they talk of expansion

Is it just me, or do these days I hear less about Perth and more about CQ, in comparison.

No offence to Perth, just a thought...

IMO it's just too early for them. They should be aiming for the tv deal after this upcoming one if they want a chance (so, around 2020). The population just isn't there, there's no stadium (the government will only build it if they get the license, not before. However the NRL only wants bids that already have a stadium) and it won't add much value to the comp. Not to mention that there's a chance it could destabilise North QLD.

Sure they might bring in big $$ from the mining companies but I'd much prefer they got behind the Cowboys and made them stronger.

It's awesome that they have really passionate people behind the bid but I'd much prefer the inevitable fourth QLD team to be in SEQ/Brisbane.

The population of the greater Rockhampton district is only around 100K. They would need to attract fans from far and wide to being even close to sustainable imo. Pop growth in that region is also fairly static.

SEQ however has a large pop which is tipped to boom. Surely if another Q'land team was coming in it would represent that region of the State?

I can't believe people are even talking about a team from CQ.

Almost as ridiculous as PNG.

Why don't we have a Mt Isa team while we're at it.

GC are barely established, lets them make their mark before another Qld side. Ideally Cronulla will shift up there as their share of Sydney shrinks more.

Stop bagging PNG. You all bitched there is no money there, currently they have the aeroplane company, Holliday Inn and Coca Cola on board and they are considering replicating Skilled Park stadium - the NRL clearly said they have to build a new stadium if they are serious. If they do build it - what are you going to say then?

I think they currently only have less money than the Bears.
