I also liked how he's decided to reward Shillington for being our best and most consistent prop by dropping him to the bench.

Canberra fans, what's doing with Justin Carney? I liked him, but so far Vidot (fair enough), James Stuart and now Brett Kelly have been picked over him?

I read in RLW that he was working his way back from injury and would be "pushing for selection over the next few weeks"

Interesting to see Toopi back in the NRL for the Titans, has he played much footy lately?

Justin Carney is working his way back from a broken fib and tib, that he suffered mid last year. He has played two games for Raiders' feeder club, Souths Logan, and is building up to match fitness. Once he is back, him and David Milne will be ahead of Stuart and Brett Kelly in the pecking order.

Furner is obviously looking to wear out Souths starting team against a second string Canberra starting side and then he is going to send on the A-Team when Souths are tired and only lead by 30 points.

Snapping your leg in two places and then almost dying on the operating table usually takes a while to come back from.

Good team named, I like it.

Almost dying???

DEATH STARE

by Tony Adams RLW

Raiders flyer Justin Carney has revealed how he almost died from complications following that shocking broken let two weeks ago.

Speaking for the first time since his season came to a shuddering halt against the Titans, Carney says he thought his career was over when he saw his foot at right angles to this leg.

But Carney had far greater problems when complications set in from surgery to fix his shattered ankle.

Bone marrow from the accident found its way into Carneys blood stream and lungs - a potentially fatal situation.

"It was bad... real bad" Carney tells RLW. "The marrow got into my system and apparantly that can be very serious. They kept me in hospital and filled me full of cortisone and antibiotics and I eventually got through it. Coming on top of the broken ankle and the surgery, it was the last thing I needed"

Television viewers were sickened by the sight of Carneys ankle turning 90 degrees under the weight of Josh Dugans body as the Raiders scrambled to shut down a Titans attacking raid.

"I was just standing there doing nothing when Josh collected me. If I'd been six inches further away nothing would have happened...but thats footy" the 21 year old says.

"The pain really didnt hit me until 30 seconds or so after I crashed to the ground. I tried to get up, something didnt feel right and then I saw my foot pointing the wrong way. I thought, 'this could be the end of my career here and now'. The pain was so unbearable I kept blacking out. They gave me so many painkillers in the ambulance on the way to hospital that we ran out and had to make a stop to get some more".

The problems didnt end there for Carney, whose brief NRL career has already produced 12 tries in 20 games.

"I had to wait for a day and a half before they would operate and was in pain the whole time" he says.

"they wouldnt let me eat or drink the whole time which made me feel even worse. They put a steel rod in the leg and its slowly getting better....I can hopefully start running again in 10 weeks and I'm planning to be back on the paddock in round one next year".

Carney is still struggling to get around on crutches but he is being spoilt on the home front.

"My girlfriend Brie is looking after me and I am using the time off footy to complete a personal training course", he says.
