NSW retain NRL grand final

AAP Tue, 08 Jun 2010 13:45:39
The NSW government will spend $45 million to keep the NRL grand final match at Sydney's ANZ Stadium for the next 10 years.
The funding, announced in the 2010/11 state budget on Tuesday, means 84,500 league fans will be able to watch the game and wider community can enjoy a week long grand final festival.
"NSW is the spiritual home of rugby league - we have the history and it is the home of rugby league - and now we will retain this great game for another decade," Premier Kristina Keneally said of the agreement with the NRL.
Last year, the grand final attracted about 16,500 interstate visitors and 8500 from regional NSW.
It injected $10 million in the state's economy.

Great news for us Sydneysiders, but even then I think QLD deserve to have a GF played at Suncorp perhaps once every 4 years or so if they can match the bid and pick up the shortfall.

They can have the QRL GF there every year mate. Can have the NRL GF when they have a 70000 seat stadium and a second team playing out of Brisbane, ie - NEVER!!

its ridiculous to sell it for so cheap for 10 years... the administration will just spend this money short-sightedly and be screwed later on. Should've gone with a 2 or 3 year deal, so its up for renegotiation after every few seasons - this will increase the actual $$$ the NRL gets + ensure a steady stream of extra income.

Shove that up your ass john Brumby. Your self proclaimed 'sporting capital of the world' scummy state that alleges Melbourne is the 'true home' of Rugby League in Australia will NEVER see a rugby league Grand Final!

Yea... I don't mind NSW landing the GF host rights again but 10 years is too long. On top of that I wouldn't mind seeing the GF thrown around the country every now and then.

That money is going straight to the clubs. I think 300K per club per season. So $4.8mil per year, which is $48mil so the other $3mil presumably will come from the soon to be $1billion TV rights deal. Or the leaving of News.

As someone else pointed out, the article mentions it brings in $10 million in state revenue every year. With inflation + expected growth of the game + GF celebration week, this figure will grow to extraordinary amounts in a few years... perhaps even double. Now Timtim, you tell me, 6-7 years from now... if the expected revenue is about $20 mill every year, $4.5 is a bargain for the rights to hold the event.

5 years from now, are you going to be clapping this decision, who knows what can happen in 5 years? Vic might get a pro-RL govt that might want to triple the 4.5 for state vs state chest-beating purposes (who cares what the reasons are?) the whole point of this venture was to market and grow GF week as an 'event' that can be transferable to other markets if the return is good enough for the game. By selling it for yes, dirt cheap $45 mil for 10 years, they are robbing themselves of possible vast amounts of future revenue.

Please stop talking rationally and logically to Timmy, his feeble little mind can't comprehend either concept. You're spot on, the NSW government paid a pittance in relation to what the event is really worth and they'll make a very handsome profit on it every year.

This is yet another example of the gross ineptness of our games hierarchy. With the rights up as to who hosts the GF they had the perfect opportunity to maximise the games true worth creating a bidding war between the state governments (even using Victoria to up the price even though we all know they had sweet f**k all chance to get it) yet they sell it for a pittance, just like they did out tv rights.

I may not be an "events valuer" Tim Tim but i'm sure as hell not a deluded halfwit who thinks that our GF isn't worth much much more than $4.5 million a year they paid without going up a cent in that 10 year period. Obviously you are that deluded and severely undervaluing our game like our leaders. You'd be perfect for a job in the NRL.
