Slater is not a patch on the great Mick Liubinskas!

can you be the best "player" in a team sport with different roles? Surely you can only be the best of all time in your position. How can you compare a FB to a prop to a half back?

I'm pretty sure with a weak team Johns wouldn't have looked half as good as he did (just ask Thurston!)

few quacks in this thread - great player - you would have to wait until about ten years after his career ends to get any perspective on it - anyone with a clue would realise that - same for johns and lockyer for that matter - still too soon

Best fullback I've seen, mind you I'm only 22. As someone already said, hard to compare him to a forward or even a center or winger for that matter. Each position requires different skills, i doubt slater could score the acrobatic tries that wingers like Ferguson score but does that mean Ferguson is a better player than slater? No.

He may end up being the best fullback of all time (with which not everyone will agree), probably go down as the greatest competitor of all time, would hate to be his kid in backyard anything, there would be no mercy.

i'd say the likes of a prescott might have it over him regarding all-time competitors or the king for that matter - merely confirms what i said before

Best fullback of all time is Clive Churchill, as is universally acknowledged. Best fullback of the last 10 years is Lockyer, who also happens to be the best 5/8 of the last 10 years. Best player of all time is debatable, but I would lean toward Dally Messenger. No other players since has matched him for being universally acclaimed as the best player, and so far ahead of the rest that any discussion would be meaningless.

churchill is regarded as the best australian fullback by many - and repeated verbatim by many more without a clue - any debate concerning greatest players needs to consider those from all countries between 1895-2010 - clearly beyond most

Turn it up. Either you're a bigger troll than the OP, or whenever you saw the Knights play Johns' brilliance blinded you from the bunch of hacks he had as team mates (with a few notable exceptions). The principle difference between Johns and Thurston is that Johns dragged his team of average players up, where as Thurston's team drags him down.

So how do you explain how Johns excelled at Origin level?? Certainly not with a team of hacks!! Just like Thurston now....

f**k me Johnathon Docking was street ahead of Slater
but for me Graham Eddie was a goodun and that is something as he was manly through and through and my blood says I have to hate all things Manly, and he could kick goals as well, something Slater could only dream of

my old man couldn't split raper & murphy.

he maintains murphy is the finest halfback he ever saw.

he rated raper the finest all-round talent.

at the conclusion of lewis' career, he rated wally alongside both of them.

for mine, i can't split wally & sterling.
