How to fix Monday Night Footy

No problems with Monday night games, if they are bringing in the TV dollars.

Massive problem with how they handle them. The current ad-hoc approach is horrible for all concerned.

It is particularly unfair that the likes of Newcastle, Canberra and NQ (who rely on huge catchments) are constantly disadvantaged by scheduling, where Sydney teams basically get to pick their own draw to ensure "blockbusters".

How can we fix MNF?

Simply, Monday night games should be made into an event - a weekly event at the one stadium - ANZ stadium.

All Sydney teams get massive advantages when it comes to scheduling, and they should have no problems committing one or two home games a year to make Monday night games an event at ANZ.

If the Sydney teams commit to it and grow it, it won't be long before Monday night at ANZ is an institution, and the games are getting the same or even better crowds than weekend games.

Moving the kick-off to 7:30 might help, and obviously knowing the schedule in advance will as well - for example, Manly v StGeorge Illawarra MNF could be scheduled on a long weekend to enable both sets of fans every opportunity to come along.

Instead of being the black hole it is now, with the right marketing and hype Monday could be the blockbuster that is talked about all weekend - just like in the NFL.

Also with the cash that ANZ stadium splashes around, it could certainly be made financially enticing to the clubs who don't ordinarily play there.

Might even be able to offer discount tickets, or dedicated MNF packages for RL fans to attend every MNF game, or a selection of them. Having such a big stadium provides the flexibility to have some innovative ticketing packages.

Huge marketing potential, but of course it would take a bit of foresight and (short term) sacrifice to make it happen..... RL isn't exactly renowned for either...

Sydney Football Stadium perhaps? Bit more viewer friendly.

Good idea nonetheless, but good ideas aren't welcome around NRL headquarters.

how to fix it? move it to Sunday arvo

Ideally, yes - but that isn't going to happen.

SFS is probably a better stadium, but my rationale is that ANZ has the cash to make it happen and a greater number of teams use it already and/or are based close-ish to it.

MNF should be determined before the season starts from rounds 1-26.

It should be played at 7:30. That half hour makes a big difference.

I agree that it should be played at centrally located stadiums. Lang Park would be perfect for a handful of fixtures a year.

The Sydney clubs should get an agreement going with Sydney Buses and Sh*tty Rail for free transport to the venue like the QLD Clubs/Translink agreement.

Maybe if you used ANZ and the SFS, depending on the game.

Why the hell would Manly, Easts, Saints, Cronulla fans want to go to ANZ? (I'd throw Souffs in there as well but they've shown themselves willing to have their club whored out for anything, so whatever.)

I can certainly see your point but I guess the idea is to make it automatic, and a hyped up event - you know that every monday, during season, the game is at the one stadium (which is central for most of League supporting Sydney).

You're missing the point of MNF... It exists because Foxtel wanted it and payed for it and have the right to choose the game that's played on a Monday night. But good ideas otherwise though whether clubs agree to it is another story. Given it's difficult to get people to attend MNF already, saying to fans you have to travel to ANZ each time if you do want to go it's very offputting. Especially if you're planning on taking the kids along because you're not going to get home till 10pm at least on a school night.

I agree, it should be set out before the season starts, I don't think Monday nights work all the time, with rep games etc it gets in the way a bit. I would rather have Mondays played in 16 rounds so every team has one home Monday night game, allocated before the season starts. This would mean that 10 rounds would have no Mondays.

Eg this year rounds 9,10,11,12,13,14,15,16,17,( all the rounds around rep time ) and round 26 would miss out.

On the non monday rounds I would like to see a 3pm Sat afternoon fixture, or 12pm Sunday for Warriors home games.

I don't agree on the centralised grounds, not everyone lives near the city. People are not going to travel into the city with their family from outer suburbs, game finishes at 9 - 9.30, then walk or bus to central, train home in bed sometime around midnight. Not going to happen on a schoolnight.

The attraction for Friday & Sat nights is that people don't have to get up for work the next day and the kids don't have school. Also a great way to unwind at the end of the week or kick off a big night, start at the footy and then kick on elsewhere. You also have the office workers who stay back for drinks after work and then go off to the footy. You don't get that for Monday nights.

I don't see bigger crowds for Monday as opposed to what you could get on a Sat or Sunday afternoon but am happy to put up with it if it means more $$$ into the game from Fox. Still doesn't mean I'm likely to go to the games.

For each game, there should be 5,000 tickets available for $5 on the side of the ground that you see on TV.
The NRL/Foxtel should pay the club $20 for every $5 ticket they sell.

Play the game at SFS every week and target city workers
All tickets $10
Free buses from main pick up points in the city
Free public transport from all other stations
7.30pm kick off
Market, market and market some more!

So you are suggesting Brisbane should play five of their home games per year on Monday nights?

If that is the case I'd like to know how that is a solution to Monday Night Football, as you would be treating Brisbane fans with disdain.

If you were going to go with this one stadium each week idea (which I think has massive flaws and is a stupid idea), it'd have to be at the SFS to target the city workers. Getting to homebush by 7pm on a Monday night is impossible for anyone who doesn't live and work in Western Sydney

And how is that fair on fans of the Bulldogs, Eels and Tigers whose fans will be forced out to the SFS when those teams play their monday night games. For people that DON'T live or work in the Sydney CBD the SFS is equally as difficult to get to. Common sense should apply and that's why monday night games are best suited to being played at the local home grounds.

I think they should introduce Thursday night football instead. I'm much more likely to attend knowing the weekend is just around the corner!
