PARRAMATTA Eels halfback Jeff Robson will be given first crack at making the number seven jersey his own come Round 1 and is desperate to prove his doubters wrong.
After spending 2010 in a mixture of hooker and half, the Eels have opted out of the race for halfback Matt Orford with incumbent coach Stephen Kearney backing his current halves to do the job.
For 28-year-old Robson, it was just the news he needed to hear.
He pulled Daniel (Mortimer) and myself aside last week and said we were going to get first crack at it, Robson told nospam23.com.au.
Obviously when someone says that youre not good enough that motivates me to go better next year.
Theres been a lot said about our halves so Im looking to cement my position in the team as halfback.
Im a bloke who likes to not say a great deal and get on top of my critics, he said.
Robson has already begun to put his plan into action, labelling this his toughest pre-season yet.
He is planning to not only add muscular size but work on his fitness and skills, in particular his kicking game.
With Daniel Mortimer partnering him in the halves, Robson said his five-eighth has a big future in the game and with Mortimer seven years his junior, Robson says he needs to take on more leadership if he is to stamp his authority next season.
Being a bit older and a half I need to step up and be a leader, Robson explained.
Im working on my fitness and my kicking game, mainly my longer kicking game.
Im working on playing a bit of hooker at training just in case things dont work out.
I prefer to play half but I dont care as long as Im in the team.
A Parramatta junior, Robson spent four years at the club before defecting to Manly where he spent five years and made his first grade debut playing six games for the Sea Eagles.
When Manly signed Eels junior Trent Hodkinson, Robson returned home to the Eels and hasnt looked back.
I really enjoyed playing at the club as a junior, he said.
To come back was a great opportunity and turned out to be a great year.
The year was 2009, when the Eels made a spectacular charge to the finals, making the grand final only to stumble at the final hurdle - defeated by an illegal Melbourne Storm outfit.
It was a great ride, unfortunately we fell short (but) it gives you motivation to go one better next year especially after a disappointing season this year, Robson said.
