lol other clubs should follow cronulla marketing right ?

Cronulla raise money by accepting money from Fake cancer victim in secret bank accounts...

yawn

old news.

in the past, souths were broke, then nearly went under..then were bought buy 2 men, one of which signed a sponsor that was a complete fraud and caused a sporting team to collapse and another team to lose its best player.

this is the same team that had a lower grade player shot and killed

a player who ran away from drug testers

players crapping in shoes

etc

etc

Maybe I am just overestimating the intelligence of the general public. Who doesn't just see this as a bit of cheap publicity. Bon Jovi don't care. Oprah didn't care. They get given something by Crowe, they wear it in front of a camera once, then they throw it away.

Who would be swayed to follow rugby league due to this??

Three gigs at the SFS would suggest Bon Jovi are still extremely popular in Australia. Moreso than bands like Metallica, who were out last month and played Acer Arena three times from memory (concert I went to was great).

Good on Crowe for trying to promote the game and LOL at a Sharks fan knocking him. A club on their last legs with geniused fans poking fun at other clubs trying to spread the word.

Cronulla and their fans should do the rest of us a favour and pull up stumps.

The reason Rugby League is such a marginalised game is because we have fans who are so narrow minded.

x 10,000

I can't believe that every time Russell Crowe promotes his team and our code that all the petty minded morons here can do is knock him.

What the f**k have the knockers ever done that has positively helped Rugby League?

Russell, like him or hate him, is brilliant for Rugby League. He promotes the hell out of our game and pours a truck load of money into it to boot.

I have nothing but respect for him.

No you aren't overestimating it, you're spot on. While i don't have any problem with the cheap publicity stunts (which every club of all codes is guilty of) it won't make one bit of difference in growing the game overseas.

I mean if i were to see a massive movie star wearing a jersey or talking about a game that was foreign to me, i know i sure as sh*t wouldn't think about it for one second after i saw it and i don't think 99% of other people would either. It's nice to think that these stunts actually help grow the game but the reality is it just doesn't.

I'm not having a go at Crowe. I just seriously doubt this sort of thing would make any material difference to people following or not following rugby league.

If Crowe really wants to make a difference with rugby league in the USA, he should be doing his bit to get the game shown on decent channels. Having people actually see the game would mean a hell of a lot more than seeing Oprah with a hat with a rabbit on it, or Bon Jovi wearing a red and green shirt at a gig.

this cheap publicity is worth alot of money...ask richard branson...

you have no idea about marketing 101

why do you think nike pays millions to athletes... product endorsements sell and work....

why do you think Jordon shoes are so popular.... celebrity endorsements.

turn on the tv and see all the celebrities on commercials...

if your fav person is jon bon jovi and he promotes souths then you are more likely to support souths if you undecided

Well done to Crowe.

Unfortunately, thinking outside the square to push your own brand and sponsors is beyond the simpletons on this thread.

I guess when you have low rent sponsors like the CFMEU (who do not care about beastiality) who cares right?

Thinking outside the square, stretching a bit aren't we?

He was wearing a Melbourne Heart shirt during him encore in Melbourne last week FFS. Not exactly some creative genius at work.

It's dumb that people don't think this kind of marketing acheives anything. Celebrities get paid a lot of money every day of the week to sell a product, Shane Warne sells about 20 products. When he made that Maccas ad there was someone out there who said "wow warnie is selling maccas, I'm going to go out and get some". And Crowe is getting celebrities to market Souths and the NRl for free and getting who knows how much free publicity out of it.

But Richard Branson started off selling/spruiking things that all people around the world actually wanted as in music, flights etc Bon Jovi and Oprah wearing Souths gear is just a massively different scenario. Whether we like it or not the vast majority of the States don't know and just don't care about our game and those celebs wearing the gear won't make one iota of difference.

How many people in the States do you actually think will take up following our game?

You're missing the big point. When these famous celebs endorse a certain product you see it on tv/online/print/radio ad nauseum ramming it down your throat and jamming it in your mind to the point you can't help but notice it and remember it. Why do you think the most annoying ads are often the most memorable? Because you hear them over and over and over again. A celeb like Oprah wearing a hat once and Bon Jovi a jersey (which the States more than likely won't see anyway) will do absolutely f**k all to grow the game over there.

If they saw these things on a daily basis as in tv ads or something it might be different but once off things shown sporadically every now and again will achieve very little to nothing. As i said in my first post here, i've no problem with clubs doing this and every single one of them has but if you actually think it'll make any difference you're sadly mistaken.

Not to knock the bloke's efforts, but I would think that has SFA impact on anything of any note. I doubt Oprah and Jon Bon Jovi go out to celeb A parties or frat parties wearing Souths jerseys.

Agreed.

And if there was actually some prior knowledge of the NRL in the USA, so that when people see Oprah or Bon Jovi wearing this stuff and recognise it at NRL merchandise, then they might actually put 2 and 2 together and it would make some sort of difference.

These one-off little things will not make a difference, no matter how much some people want to believe.

f**k the states, I'm talking about the headlines and publicity it creates here. ie, Being put alongside a 50 death tragedy on the DT home page.

who said his doing this to promote NRL to america...

His doing this to promote south sydney ....

Australians like american celebrties and thus getting these celebrities to wear/support his team is publicity and promotion for south here in aust...

and if he get overseas support thats a bonus..

WHY DID YOU THINK TINA TURNER WAS BROUGHT HERE ?

I think all the skeptics have missed the point. What if Oprah or JBJ wearing a jersey attracts more local fans to the game and in particular Souths, because the perception is Russell Crowe is well connected in entertainment circles and for the average person, it may be the tipping point in supporting Souths.

Again, the narrow minded and simpleton reaction from Rugby League "fans" never ceases to amaze me.
