Paul Gallen wins hearts of All-star game voters

CRONULLA enforcer Paul Gallen has officially become the villain you love - shedding his "NRL Most Hated" tag in emphatic fashion.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Gallen will today be thrust into the 2011 All Stars with, incredibly, more votes than any other player in the NRL.

The shock result, which comes only 12 months after he was stripped of the Sharks captaincy, gives the reformed bad boy the same status as NRL favourites such as Wests Tiger Benji Marshall and Brisbane legend Darren Lockyer.

In other surprising results:

* BOOM Raider Josh Dugan secured the No. 1 jersey ahead of Parramatta and NSW superstar Jarryd Hayne;

* ICONIC Eels back-rower Nathan Hindmarsh won a coveted spot in the forward pack;

* AND Queensland hooker Cameron Smith easily beat home his NSW rivals Robbie Farah and Mick Ennis.

The All Stars team will be named at NRL headquarters this morning - when coach Wayne Bennett will also name his two "smokey" additions.

While one player from every NRL team must be selected, it was thought Gallen could lose a chunk of votes to New Zealand counterpart Jeremy Smith, the tattooed Shire recruit who is fresh off a premiership win with St George Illawarra.

Instead, the Sharks hardman, who last night ran water for the NSW Legends at Parramatta Stadium, sat atop the list.

"Is that right, first picked? Outstanding," good mate and NSW legend Mark Geyer enthused. "I've known Gal for years and he really reminds me so much of Les Boyd.

"On the field he's incredibly aggressive - tough. One of those blokes you never want to play against. But off it he's such a softly spoken, quiet bloke. He has the same ability to switch off that guys like Les and Gorden Tallis had.

"Away from footy he's a real decent bloke, a family man, and his football really speaks for itself. They're talking about him as the new NSW captain and rightly so. I'd pick him."

The result caps off an incredible 18 months for Gallen, who was sacked as Sharks captain and replaced by Trent Barrett after the racial abuse drama with Dragons forward Mickey Paea. He was in the headlines again six months later when police caught him urinating in the street after a Christmas party.

Yet as part of his ongoing turnaround, he was recently awarded the Harry Sunderland Medal as Australian player of the year.

While Dugan's selection is also a surprise, an Eels insider last night said Hayne would have been an unlikely starter because he's still recovering from a hamstring injury.

Look at his competition for a spot at the Sharks. Who else was the public going to give their Sharks vote to? The biggest problem with this team is that a player could poll 90% of the votes at one team, and at another club they might not have even made the second round. IMO they should do a genuine All Stars team and pick the top players voted in for each position, regardless of the club they play for.

Some clubs fans might feel a bit dissapointed they have no showing. But it would offer a higher quality game.

I agree that this has as much to do with who he was up against.

Gallen deserves to be there no question, but it wasn't like Hindmarsh who had to split votes with Hayne or a scenario like the Roosters or Tigers who put up 4 viable candidates.

The biggest joke of all is how Kurt Gidley, despite not being voted in, is going to play anyway.

Now he just needs to get the thuggery, stupidity and penalties out of his game and NSW will go well this year..

Yeah have to agree with you there MX, now that Luke Covell retired.

Lukey would of romped it in in front of the Don Bradman of the League.

It will be interesting to see who the Sharks buy to play alongside Gal when they become the wealthiest stand alone non merged club in Sydney.

not defending Gidley, but i'm for having a few "coaches picks" in the team - of which he was one.

i suppose you're going to tell me about how much of a nuffy Bennett is next.

Were Bennett's two picks Civoniceva and Gidley? If so, it makes perfect sense. Looking at the bench it was short a prop forward and utility player. These two players are the most obvious options.

yes they were.

Bennett said his involvement with the 2010 NRL All Stars was one of the most rewarding of his career and he is again excited to be involved with a new-look team.
"I am very pleased with the team the public has selected and I am proud to be able to include Petero Civoniceva and Kurt Gidley as my two selections.
"They are wonderful players and their leadership and experience will certainly add to what is an exciting team.
"To have a group like this together will be a great spectacle for the fans and I know this team will play with the commitment and pride that made last year’s match such a memorable encounter."

Except for the fact Gidley isn't a utility player.

He's an average fullback. He can't play wing. He can't play centre. He can't play 5/8th. He can't play halfback. He can't play prop. He's a barely passable hooker. He can't play second row. He can't play lock.

Luke Lewis would have been the ideal utility, but he's injured unfortunately. Apart from him, I think it's safe to say there really isn't a genuine utility in the NRL anymore.

he should be captain, coach. the fact that he was picked on the bench is a farce, should be starting somewhere. can't f**king help myself.
