Except for the fact Gidley isn't a utility player.

He's an average fullback. He can't play wing. He can't play centre. He can't play 5/8th. He can't play halfback. He can't play prop. He's a barely passable hooker. He can't play second row. He can't play lock.

Luke Lewis would have been the ideal utility, but he's injured unfortunately. Apart from him, I think it's safe to say there really isn't a genuine utility in the NRL anymore.
There's really no need for him on the bench even if he did have genuine utility value. The bench already covers any position he is likely to play as our "utility".

Feleti Mateo - Lock, 5/8
Michael Ennis - Hooker
Shaun Kenny-Dowall - Centre, Winger

Even if he was used at fullback, i'm sure one of Jennings, SKD, Uate or Morris could move to fullback and carve up. IMO the spot should have gone to another prop or second rower. Would rather see us rotate to forwards more then positions where it won't be needed.

The funny thing about that article is that it says that Josh Dugan pipped Jarryd Hayne for the fullback spot in a *shock* decision, then in the next line it says Nathan Hindmarsh was the selected Eels player!?
Proves how useless the Daily Telecrap is.
Two things; 1. Jarryd Hayne is just coming off an injury so he wouldn't have played anyway, and 2. Nathan Hindmarsh beat him in the votes regardless, so that point is ridiculous.

On Gallen, he thoroughly deserves the accolade. Good on you Gal! :)

Are you really that delusional? He is a backs utility, of course he can't play prop you moron, nor is he big enough to play second row. He is actually a very good hooker. He probably could play lock but there has never been any reason to put him there.
This from the most anti-Knights person on the forum  how do you expect people to listen to you when you write crap like this? He's a very capable backs utility, and as he has showed he can perform admirably well in several different positions. That is a utility player. Name me someone else apart from Luke Lewis who can fill that many positions? Lewis is a better player of course but Gidley isn't big enough to cover the forwards positions Lewis can cover.

Gidley is a jack of all trades master of none. But I agree given that every position is already covered there is no need for him as a utility on the bench. But there was no way he wasn't going to be in the side with all the man love for him by coaches, other players etc.

I agree it's no shock Dugan was picked as fullback, as he's better in that position than Hayne.

But make no mistake. Regardless of whether Hindmarsh accrued more votes than Hayne, Dugan would have been selected as fullback. So Hindmarsh would have been the Parramatta player even if Hayne received more votes than him.

Did you not stop to think that the reason Hindmarsh received so many votes is because people couldn't pick Hayne as they already had Dugan selected, and the other Parramatta players weren't worth voting for?

Gidleys alright, Lewis however is a much better utility so its pretty disappointing that hes injured. The rest of the team looks quite good.

lol Gidley is unbelievably sh*t. I'd be a lot happier if SKD pulled out of this game too, don't need him injured in some irrelevant all star game.

Wasn't Gaba wanking on for weeks that there was no way in hell Dugan would get fullback over Darius Boyd who had a mortgage on that spot because of Bennett? Forgot about Brett Morris I see

Will be Captain of N.S.W this year.

Wow, what a surprise with Ricky Stuart coach.

Can't believe Bennett chose Gidley, how dare he, Skeepe obviously has much more of an idea than that nuffy Bennett

Yeah, I wish he would tackle a little softer too. Also, I wish Paul would help the player he has tackled to his feet so he can play the ball more quickly. How many penalties did Gallen give away in last year's Origin appearances?

Bennett as a proud Queenslander is picking Gidley to influence NSW to do the same thing.

He is probably having a little chuckle to himself right now.

Gidley is a damn good player. If the Australian and NSW selectors consistently select him (yes I know) then obviously he is doing something good.

Frenzy.

Well f**k me. That's just not good enough. 2 f**king penalties in 160 minutes of f**ken tough footy. He's just a lose f**ken cannon that cost us the series. Geez, I hope he doesn't gain selection this year. He obviously isn't suited to that level of footy.

Paul is getting better with discipline, as seen last Origin series.

And will only get better, people do get impressions from previous years, and rightly so.

Player mature, anyone would think, Wally Lewis, Brett Kenny, Tommy Bishop, Gordon Tallis, Mal Meninga, never gave one away.

You obviously didn't watch the Origin series last year.
Gidley, after years of being overawed on the Origin stage, finally started to show his value off the bench to cover the tiring hooker.

The fact he can hang back and play an up and attacking fullback role when he's not AT dummy half, whilst leaving the actual fullback covering the defensive side shows his value.

But hey, let's just ignore the footballing knowledge of Wayne Bennett. I mean, what the f**k does he know about football?

 Because he doesn't have a history of conceding stupid, brainless penalties and dog high tackles.

He may have improved in that respect, but he's still got that reputation.

Hopefully he sheds it in this year's series as NSW win back the shield, but that remains to be seen.

Yeah have to agree with you there MX, now that Luke Covell retired.

Lukey would of romped it in in front of the Don Bradman of the League.

It will be interesting to see who the Sharks buy to play alongside Gal when they become the wealthiest stand alone non merged club in Sydney.

How do units on Mangrove Swamps sell elsewhere in the world? Find the answer to that old fella and I reckon you'll have a fair idea of the Sharkies aspiration to become what you've outlined above and who they will buy. Not sure they'll have the cabbage in time to build team of stars around Gallen before he retires though.

12 mill is a lot of debt to service.
