The dragons are reigning premiers and there is no other story other then Bennett is off contract, like with the south Sydney rumour where Bennett was supposed to announce last month he was their coach.

Its only hearsay from someone who claimed to have heard or been told, with no real facts.

Oh well if he does announce it before the start of the season (that he is leaving), makes me feel pretty confident of back to back premierships for us.

The longer there is no decision made public from bennett or the dragons, the more chance Bennett is staying at the dragons.

Channel 9 reported it from the Sun Herald.

The Sun Herald report (http://m.smh.com.au/rugby-league/le...ennett-heads-for-the-exit-20110205-1ahkn.html)

WAYNE BENNETT looks certain to leave St George Illawarra at the end of the season.

The Sun-Herald understands that the seven-time premiership-winning mentor has already told the Dragons he intends to coach elsewhere in 2012.

Dragons chief executive Peter Doust is desperate to retain Bennett and hasn't given up on changing the 61-year-old's mind.

But after finally breaking the joint-venture club's premiership drought, Bennett is believed to be looking for a fresh challenge. And there's no shortage of suitors.

South Sydney, Canterbury, North Queensland and Newcastle have all informally expressed interest. Brisbane could also be a destination given his family still lives in Queensland and Bruno Cullen, who fell out with Bennett towards the end of the coach's 21-year tenure at the Broncos, has stepped down as chief executive.

While Bennett's future is in his own hands, the same cannot be said for many of his clipboard-wielding colleagues. More than half a dozen are off contract come October but it appears only five - Brian Smith, Stephen Kearney, David Furner, Craig Bellamy and John Cartwright - are certain to retain their present jobs beyond 2011.

Bennett's decision will have a domino effect on the futures of existing coaches and a growing queue hoping to enter or re-enter the NRL ranks.

Ricky Stuart, Nathan Brown, Daniel Anderson, Jason Taylor, former Melbourne assistant Michael Maguire and ex-New Zealand coach Brian McClennan are among those available.

Anderson's agent, Jim Banaghan, said the sacked Eels coach was ready to step back into the NRL fray. ''He is a career coach; if anyone is looking for a coach he will be there and interested in any opportunities that might come up,'' Banaghan said.

Former Dragons mentor Brown, now coaching at Super League side Huddersfield, has repeatedly said he aimed to eventually return to the NRL. ''Yeah, I'd love to,'' he said. ''Like all coaches, you want to coach in the NRL. I've had one go at it and I'd like to have another go at it. It's the best comp in the world.''

Negotiations between Furner - off contract at the end of 2012 - and Canberra officials for an extension are expected to start as soon as this week, while off-contract Titans mentor John Cartwright is assured of retaining his position after guiding his fledgling side to the top four last season.

The other Queensland coaches may not be so lucky. North Queensland's Neil Henry is under intense pressure, as is Brisbane counterpart Ivan Henjak. Henry is contracted until the end of 2013 but has performance clauses in his contract. If the Cowboys miss the play-offs for a third straight year, he is almost certain to be punted. A potential wildcard north of the border is Mal Meninga. After overseeing a historic fifth straight series win with the Maroons, he is considering a return to the NRL ranks. Parramatta recruit Kearney will be given at least two years to rebuild the Eels while Bellamy, despite the Storm's salary cap dramas and the Blues' inability to halt Queensland's five-year winning streak, is still considered one of the game's premier coaches. However, should Bennett opt not to return to the Broncos, don't be surprised to see a News Ltd transfer deal that would result in Bellamy returning to the club where his coaching career started. The Dragons and Souths are also in pursuit of Bellamy.

Of course, much depends on Bennett. ''We're obviously keen for him to consider an extension,'' Doust said yesterday. ''We've had continuing discussions and we'll communicate in due course. There's nothing resolved. We haven't put a time frame on it.''

Player managers have complained it is almost impossible to conduct negotiations on behalf of their clients while so much uncertainty exists in the coaching ranks. ''Players want to know who will be coaching them before they join a club,'' one prominent agent said. ''Clubs also don't want to enter negotiations until they know for certain who their coach will be next year.''

Everyone is waiting for the first domino to fall.

What a garbage article.
How are they allowed to publish such rubbish.

One quote from any official source (Peter Doust) and it stated they are still negotiating.

Even if Wayne Bennett finishes up at the end of the year, we have to chase someone better than those listed as available. Perhaps we can tempt Mick Potter to come over from the ESL?

I will believe it when I see it. Any media speculation on the Bennett will he or won't he storyline is just a cheap story for hack journos. Wayne Bennett will tell all concerned when he is good and ready and not before. I have no doubt that he knows what he is going to do and will tell all that need to know at the right time.

Bulllseye ! - don't let the truth get in the way of a headline. As with the tv rights deal, the key word ( as mentioned above ) is speculation.....

Plus the guys who wrote the article have tossed numerous names around for the various teams mentioned to give themselves the chance to claim the exclusive. If you shoot enough arrows, you'll hit something, so in the future the Sun Herald will wobble their head & claim "Feb 6, 2011 - you read it here first"

I would have said before it all came out in the media that Souths had him signed, sealed and delivered. However now I'm not so sure. Bennett hates the media bullsh*t, and I could easily seem him doing what he did with the Roosters and going elsewhere.

I also can't see Bennett adapting to the Crowe, Mundine, etc, media circus at Souths.

He's done his job, finally has the Dragons fulfilling their potential.

Yep. Spot on. Saints will be in a great position to sign the best available option if he leaves based on their playing list and what the club now is.

Potter or Maguire for mine. Not sure they will go down the rookie coach road again with Steve Price after Browny.

It's job done at Saints. His next move will depend on the contract price and the support of his family. 3 years travelling away from your family is a long time, especially a man in his 60's. I wish him the best of luck.

Wayne owes St George nothing. He delivered us our Premiership.

Best of luck, Wayne, in whatever you decide to do...

He came to the Dragons to win a premiership. He's done that. Unless he retires he will coach Souths next year. Crowe wants the best of everything for Souths. The best facilities, the best resources, the best players and...the best coach. He will give Bennett as much as he wants. As well as that, the chance to win a premiership with a 3rd club will be too much for him to resist.

Greatest coach ever will be coaching the greatest club ever in 2012.
