States and Territories are our equivilent to County, though a bit bigger.

I'd say States/Territories are more akin to Regions, i.e. North East, North West, Yorkshire & The Humber, East Midlands, West Midlands, East, South East, South West and Greater London.

Apparently Australia has counties. County of Cumberland being the biggest (the one that Sydney is in).

The Salford Quays in Manchester? Wigan Pier in Manchester?

No chance.

If Manchester wants a major they can have one, i doubt the towns and cities surrounding it will be happy though.

Given that the council can't even afford swimming pools at the mo, i doubt getting a major will be high on the agenda.

:D

Good answer.

Didn't they try it once already with Sale Sharks? Try to make them the Manchester Sale Sharks. Both Manchester RU and Sale RU objected to it so it was a no go.
Well it will happen Mr Wolf whether you like it or not.

The way we define cities in Australia, Greater Manchester would be classed as one big city. As would whatever the area around Liverpool is called (Scum City maybe?). The Poms though classify things differently. If Sydney were in England, the various city council areas would be classed as different towns (or boroughs).

The thing is, historically all the boroughs were separate towns, and physically, not just in name. The Poms have hung on to the distinctions, while we have just blended into big sprawling metropolises. This difference is no doubt due to the towns in England having histories going back a couple of thousand years rather than a couple of hundred.

Not so sure. As I've said I was born in Mcr and we always saw GM as a city with satellite towns like Wigan, Leigh, Altrincham as being part if it.

The states are equivalent to the ancient nations/provinces of the United Kingdom (England, Scotland, Wales , NI), not counties as Australian states have Shires anyway.

NSW / Queensland has never been like England and Scotland.

We were at war for about 1800 years!

Back in the day, Lancashire, Yorkshire, Mercia, Cornwall, Lincolnshire, Wessex etc. would of been like the states.

These were eventually split into the large counties and were then split up again for political and clerical reasons. Hence Gtr Manc, Merseyside, the 4 yorkshires etc.

It would be like splitting Queensland into North, South, East and West Queensland. Then a few years later creating a Greater Brisbane area. Brisabane would be in Queensland but on all official documents it would be Brisbane, Greater Brisbane.

Then of course you would have people from Brisbane telling people from the Gold coast or Ipswich that one day it will all just be known as Brisbane...

Woah, woah, woah sweet child of mine.

Instead of throwing insults in a typical manc style, whats wrong with what i said?

The region North of the Mersey was Northumbria, then Lancahire then it changed to a bit of Cheshire, Merseyside, Gtr Manc and Lancashire.

Thats called History. There is a big round building down Oxford Road that may help you learn about it. Assuming that is the council are not closing it.

You are the one who seems the thing Gtr Manchester will become Manchester, therefore meaning Salford and Wigan among others will be just a borough of the city, not me sunshine.

However if not thinking the sun rises, sets and shines out of Manchesters backside upsets you, then i'm real sorry.

basically greater manchester is no different to greater sydney..its just only a couple of the greater manchester teams (wigan & salford) are in the top flight...then theres oldham, rochdale, leigh, swinton lower down..............basically

Bloody hell - the technicalities in this thread are way too much for me.

For everyone else in the Universe outside of Lancashire, everything inside the M60 is basically Manchester, or Greater Manchester and everything outside of it, including Wigan, is somewhere else. The only team in Manchester is Salford, which is technically a different town, like Parramatta is a different City to Sydney. But in day to day realities Parramatta is merely a suburb of Sydney rather than a seperate City.

Rugby League struggles to gain a foothold in the City of Manchester because Manchester is a football town. Blackburn and Preston are other big towns in Lancs where football rules and Rugby League barely gets a look in. It's just not glamorous enough. Same in Liverpool. Sure they have St Helens, but that's "wooly back" country to Scousers and always will be.

Mancunians should support Salford but they don't. Changing the name of the club won't make the people of Manchester suddenly rock up to support Salford. They just don't care. It's a f**king tragedy as Salford should be one of the biggest clubs in England and if Mancunians DID follow Rugby League in numbers the game would be much much better off.

I don't know if it's an image thing about the game itself or if people are blinkered and football centric or if it's a media issue, but Mancs just don't bother with league and it sh*ts me no end.

Swinton fans always reckon they used to get a lot of support from Manchester. That died off, like most of their support, with the disasterous decision to sell Station Rd. Good to see they've had much improved crowds by playing at Salford this season.

I've lost the plot of this thread. I must have taken a wrong turn off the M60 somewhere.....

Anyway, is the point that Salford should be renamed as Manchester RL playing out of Salford?

Has Salford ever been a 'big' or 'successful' club?
I have a memory that during the 1978 Kangaroo Tour an article I read (RLW?) stated that Salford was the best team in England, in the review of the Tour match. Am I mad?

Touche, but the area they represent and the people who follow them largely are inside.

It still doesn't change the fact that East of the the Pennines most of the largest towns, Manchester, Liverpool, Preston, Blackburn etc are purely football towns.

There's plenty of room for both codes football and league to flourish there - so why doesn't league?

I always put it down to the fact that Rugby League and Football always attracted the same type of people. They were the working class games for the masses.

With the exception of Leeds, none of the big Rugby towns have a football team and vice versa. Wigan have come throught the leagues recently, but if you look at there crowds when they get relegated they may even drop a few divisions.

I guess it was a case of some went down the football route, some rugby.

British people are a stubborn lot. Rather than try and push the game into areas where it will be expensive and difficlut to grow, why not embrace what we have. It would be nice to have a big team in Preston or Blackburn, but its not vital. There are enough people living in south Lancs for the game to survive.

Yes Salford have been a very successful club int heir history. Mainly in the 1930's and late 1960's/early 70's. They were the first British club to build a proper Leagues club type facility at the Willows.

Salford to become Manc? Never in a billion years. Too much tradition, history and that fact that Manchester was once a suburb of Salford! ;-)

Yeah your right, what would i know coming from Wazza. I mean no one would ever agree with me when i say Greater Manc would not become one big city called Manchester with its own Major.

Oh no, there is one person who seems to think i was right and you were wrong.
