Daniel Mortimer lays down challenge to 'boring' Dragons

"boring to watch". It's the only line they've got left. The follow up to that line is usually "I'd rather watch my team play 'exciting' football than win [the comp]".

Wasn't it exciting watching parramatta bumble and fumble their way around a football field last season. Enthralling stuff, just like AFL. Plenty of broken field play and fumbling in that game.

Interesting thread it has become.
B Tron, if you don't like Saints, then most weekend I believe 7 other games may cater to your taste.
As a team they are not playing to appease the masses, they are playing to win, and the last time I checked the rules of this game stated that the winner is whoever is in front on the scoreboard after 80 minutes has expired, if its locked up then we go for 5 minutes each way or till a score, if its locked up after that it is a draw, if its a finals match we play till their is a winner.

At no point is winning or losing decided by how happy and entertained either team makes the viewers / crowd feel.
If more people want to watch the tigers then so be it, there will always be around 12,000 or so of us that will happily go watch Saints (and plenty in QLD as well!) and countless more thousands that will tune in to do so on TV.

No one if forcing you to attend a game and no one is forcing you to watch the TV, well given the events of last year I can understand why you would want to change the channel when Saints Vs Parra is on........................ Saints have beaten them two different ways, in the game that showed why Parra would win the comp and Saints wouldn't Hayne was taken out of play and Blocka had a coronary, in the next game the ball was kept in play to prove a point resulting in a grade A arse kicking.
Considering in game 2 all the points came from Saints, there was only one boring team that night.

Pretty good post Ulysses.

I'm a bit tired of the conversation myself, so just wanted to end by saying that i agree with you - the rules do state that the winner is the team with most points.

But i dare say that whenever sport is played people want to see great players doing great things. Otherwise what's the point?

I can find a hundred big bodies that Wayne Bennett and Craig Bellamy (and probably Kearney too, but we will see) can drill into becoming a consistent, tough, structured outfit. And this is a problem for all sports in this professional era - the emphasis on winning, the time they have to drill consistency into average players - it all adds up to sport becoming more "grey". That's why the media go over the top when a Benji, or a Hayne, or Lionel Messi, come along - because true genius is being nullified by boring professionalism and therefore it's harder for it to prosper. And it needs to be nurtured an given room to move, not hidden within stricter structures.

For those that think i'm grasping at straws because i have nothing else to hack on your team about - why would I bother? Fact is, I wouldn't be saying this if the Tigers won, so it's hardly grasping at something to harass you about. I just want to see open play and imagination. If Bennett builds on your structure and you become more exciting, then I'll be the first to recognise that it was a great 3 year plan. But if you stay boring, well then that will just be sad. You've got your victory now, there's nothing to lose. I hope you open up a bit more this year.

I thought you jumped the shark the moment you entered this thread.. but I guess you had so much more stupidity to unleash.

The emphasis on winning has been at the heart of sport since Adam raced Eve. I get the feeling that sport is just not for you. You may enjoy performance art, or ballet.

I read that line about 50 times till I convinced myself that he actually did say that.

Perhaps you guys should read the whole post and try to understand concepts, instead of just one line? (yes, I'm being supercillious)

Emphasis denotes importance. When your livelihood is riding on something, the outcome of it - in this case winning - is by nature more important than when your livelihood is not riding on it.

Thus, professionalism changes the emphasis.

Oh we understand the concept.

Some acquaintances of yours who happen to be Saints supporters, knowing what a supercilious wanker you are, have been hammering you mercilesly since the grand final (and probably the completion of the treble in Wigan). You're too much of a weak pussy to give anything back (plus you have no real comeback to them anyway) so you've retreated to the safety of the internet to relieve your frustrations.

Speaking failing to understand concepts... weren't you leaving?

It's quite obvious that Mortimer didn't mean 'boring' as a criticism, so there is no real point in firing up.

His point, which was quite accurate, is that the Dragons have a very strict, disciplined style which has clearly worked for them. They're not a side to throw caution to the wind because they don't need to.

My mates who are saints supporters are too happy about winning to bother giving me stick mate. And I love em and I'm happy for them.

Speaking of retreating...

looks like you've retreated to the "you're just a sad internet kid" argument. Well done. About as imaginative as your team.

I haven't discussed Mortimer's comments with my mates but they already know that I prefer the Premiers to play with more flair than the Dragons do.

Do they care what I, and fans of other teams, think?

Of course they do a little bit, just like you do. But I'm not going to lie to them and pretend I enjoyed watching your team last year. In fact, I was with them at the prelim barracking for the Tigers.

Yeah, but I noticed a couple of you had replied and the conversation moved from "boring" to "the emphasis on winning in the modern era". I thought that you guys might have had something worthwhile to add to that. Sadly, I was mistaken. But then what do you expect from a group who, with the excpetion of a couple of people, think that "winning is never boring" is a legitimate argument.

Don't worry, in about 3 hours you'll be able to resort to "haha look how bad you're team is, especially that loser Mortimer", and pretend that Parra's results make the "boring" comments illegitimate.

Perhaps you could have style points for various stupid acts in which case the grand final is Souths vs Sharks or Call me crazyyou could accept the fact that winning is the point thats why they award points for doing it .

BTW some of the things we do especially down our left side are things of real beauty

You are really getting desperate when you call a team boring. No doubt it is boring when another team wins everything. They call the Dragons team of the 50s and 60s boring as well.

I remember calling the Storm team boring, it was just jealously speaking. It turns out they were not boring at all, just cheating.

I imagine it must be boring for an Eels fan or anyone else to watch Saints win everything on offer. Some of the most boring Grand Finals I have ever watched involved teams such as the 2009 Eels and Storm, the 2000 Broncos and Roosters, the 1998 Broncos and Bulldogs just to name a few... but I bet the fans supporting those teams found it exhilarating.
I guess when you can't criticise Saints on performance and results, the only fall back has to be 'style'. But beauty is in the eye of the beholder and Saints are the beholders of all things large and shiny in league at the moment... Behold them down the leagues club if you like!!!

Well St George had a hard fought victory in '92, and I thought Brisbane did well to get over Canterbury in '93... oh, do you mean grand finals?

Tsk tsk... what sport do you really follow?

Funny thing is that I thought that the Eels were rather "boring" on Sat night.
By this, I mean structured and disciplined; in some ways good.
Probably not as disciplined as Saints...... yet???
The left side try to Burt from the cut-out from Hayne was straight out of the Dragons playbook, which came straight from the Broncos playbook, and the Storm use it as well.
Wonder if Mortimer, and Eels fans will think it is boring if the start winning????
I think not!!!
