Nice timing. Personally would have given it to Howard, but Rose is a good story.

CHICAGO -- Chicago Bulls guard Derrick Rose is the youngest Most Valuable Player award-winner in the history of the National Basketball Association, according to a source familiar with the situation.

The 22-year-old Rose was widely expected to win the award after leading the Bulls to a 62-20 record and No. 1 seed in the playoffs.

Michael Jordan was the last Bulls player to win the award. He won it five times, with the latest being 1998. Earlier in the season, Jordan said Rose deserved the award.

The Chicago-born point guard had a breakout third season, averaging 25 points, 7.7 assists and 4.1 rebounds. After a summer with the U.S. National team, Rose made a significant leap.

It's a repeat of 2008 - no deserving winner so give it to the most fan-friendly "story". No way D-Rose was more valuable than D-Ho, LeBron (or Wade), Kobe, Dirk etc.

I wonder if D12 will ever get the MVP? Howard couldn't do any more with that Magic team he had them on his back the entire season and even in the playoffs he was carrying his team in a losing battle and posting ridiculous numbers.

I think D12 is the most valuable player because without him the Magic would struggle to win 30 games.

Agreed.

Without Howard i reckon the Magic would be challenging the likes of the Cavs and Raptors as the worst team in the East.

Agreed.

Swap him with Zaza Pachulia (an ok backup) and I wonder what they would be like. 20 wins? Swap him with Okafor and maybe that goes to 30?

I don't want to come of as hating on Rose since what he's done this season has been impressive. He's the leader of a 60 + win team and is certainly a legit MVP candidate.

But Dwight's impact on the defensive end is pretty amazing. I mean the Magic are statistically one of the top defensive teams in the league despite being filled with mediocre defensive players. Apart from Howard, I can't think of another good defensive player in their lineup.

I guess an issue that arises from deciding the MVP is that there's no clear definition of what the MVP Award is.

Best player on the best team?
Player who means most to their team?
Best player in the league?

Voters had it easy the last two years with Lebron fitting all three categories.

I have no real problem with Rose winning it he's a great player and the clear MVP of the Bulls but I have more of a problem with Howard not winning it. If he doesn't get it next season he'll never get it IMO he'll sign/trade to somewhere like LA or NJ with another star player and if he isn't getting MVP honours carrying the Magic on his back by himself for a few years he'll never get it with help.

D-Rose doesn't exactly have great cattle around him either.
He almost single handedly dragged the bulls to number one seed so for that reason I have no problem with it.

No problem with it. Deserved winner. Well done to him.

Don't forget the bulls were without Noah and Boozer for much of the season either
agreed.

i think the way they judge it, is how would the team go without the player there.

Without Rose, Bulls would be bottom feeders.

So would the Magic, both deserved it, i think rose go on top due to a 60+ win season.

You could even say Rondo would be as well considering how sh1t the C's have gone when he plays poorly (but thats just me being biased).

Well deserved, congratulations.

edit: lol @ lebron fans.

If lebron was out, the heat have wade to fall on.
if wade is out, then they have bosch.

when he was at the cavs, he was clearly the MVP and probably would have been again this year if he was there.

No chance of him getting MVP while he is at the Heat with those players around him.

hey, let's make a best player award, then put some arbitrary rules on it so we have something to fill our column space with throughout the year, and so we can give it to nevilles like steve nash and derrick rose instead of the players who actually deserve it

this award belonged to bird and magic for the best part of the 80s, followed by michael jordan. derrick rose does not belong here. it's a fkn insult. the 80s wasn't a decade of bullshit. i doubt people were saying, "you know what? let's not give this award to larry bird. he plays with mchale and parish so he's not the best player for some reason. let's put someone else in the history books instead. what does valuable even mean? who's to say what most is?"
