How to lose a preliminary final, Paul Carige style....

I remember watching this, and could never rememeber any of these 'Carige moments' other than the kick on the last play of regulation time.

I'm assuming others won't agree (I don't really care), but after having watched it I think it's safe to say this has been blown significantly out of proportion.

The first one - the ball was still rolling and that was an incorrect call from Harrigan
The second one - stupid, stupid play. Untill this thread I thought that play alone was the only reason for the "Paul Carige Award" and always thought it was strange to single that out given some of the c**k-ups of other players (Jason Bulgarelli single-handedly cost the Raiders a semi against the Warriors from memory when he dropped a grubber over the line and Albert Fulivai single handedly lost us the preliminary final in Super League against the Sharks when he cocked up a line break)
The third one - any fullback or winger is told to never let a bomb bounce near your own tryline. If he had left it, the ball could have gone anywhere. He was in a no-win situation there.
The fourth one - Pretty stupid on this one, but once again the fullback/winger intuition of never let a bomb bounce would have been going through his head.

In short, I can't believe after watching the video that he is so hated. I'd hate a player more for showing no ticker, letting a ball bounce, and conceding a try from it.

Yeah I agree with some the above... there have been several worse performances since him I reckon, though admittedly, probably not in such a big game.

But kicking straight back and then quite obviously stepping on the touchline, those are errors that are ironed out in U10s, LOL.

the kick back was odd.
the other stuff was either unlucky for him or masterful from the dogs.
He doesn't attempt to catch the ball and anything could have happened.

poor bastard had a bad day....but not as bad as they made out.

I think Hodges had a worse one a few SOO's ago.

i think he still managed to win though.

The Eels choke couldn't have been rigged, but let's just say that News Limited had decided, from a long way out, that a Superleague team was going to win the NRL Premiership that year, and preferably play another ex- SL team in the Grand Final. Read into that what you will...

LMFAO waaaahhh....You were the fake premiers in 97 and it was proved in 98.

For all the talk about how amazing the Broncos side of 1998 was, they actually only won the minor premiership on for and against from Newcastle. In fact the Broncos only just got over the line because in the last game against LOL@50uff$ it was 10-all and LOL@50uff$ let a try in late in the game to give the Broncos the extra point and take the minor premiership. Unfortunately the Knights lost most of its forward pack to injury in the last few weeks and went into the finals with a makeshift side that couldn't go on with it. So far from the Broncos proving their dominance, across 24 rounds they were not really better than Newcastle, even though they had a squad that would make Ian Schubert giddy.

Terry Lamb's field goal. There's a play for the ages.

Exactly my point, kicking a field goal when behind by 2 (from memory). That was much more of a stuff-up than Carige, yet Carige is for some reason singled out. I just don't get it.

Where is the "How to lose a world cup" article about billy the kid's efforts in 2008?

Slater's impact on that game was far more than Carige's IMO

Trent Barrett dropping the ball over the line for no real reason other than he obviously had butter fingers is, to me, a more profound stuff up than any of Carige's efforts.

As someone said, Smith was the architect of their loss, not the poor FB who got lumped with the responsibility of cleaning up the rest of the teams mistakes.

Actually I remember Hodges not grounding the ball properly (easy try) in one game? Does anybody have that?
Now that is bad!

I think the reason Carige cops it more than some others is because he was a bit of a tard in general. That just happened to the game where he showed it the most. Whereas Terry Lamb and the like were good players who just had one bad moment. At least two of those four stuff-ups from Carige were really bad mistakes in a big game. Didn't he also have a shocker in a game against Newcastle where Joey bombed the crap out of him. I know he did it to Schifcofske once but I seem to remember Carige struggling in a game too.

Are you saying this because the knights could even make it to the last 4?
Yeah it HAD to be fixed ya stoopid pleb. Don't worry the Dogs only prevented the Knights getting smashed by the Broncos. They did ya a favour.

I was thinking more that even the best ref from the ARL (David Manson) wasn't even offered a contract in the new NRL, but pretty much every SL ref was looked after; the drugs raid halfway through the season which, strangely enough, only targeted the ARL clubs, just when Newcastle were looking as if they were a chance at challenging the Broncos for the title. I wonder why none of the Superleague teams were targetted at all? As for the Bulldogs, what about Steve Clark's caning of St George in week 1 of the finals? Something smelt fishy to me...
