I think you'll find it's quite similar at most stadiums. I tried to take a soft drink I'd bought from Maccas into Parramatta stadium a few weeks ago but was told I was not allowed because they don't allow people to take in drinks which have 'corporate' emblems on them that are not sponsors. It's a bit of a joke really this policing.

The stadiums in Melbourne are actually OK like this - you can take whatever into Etihad, the MCG or AAMI, security don't seem to care as long as it's not on the list of 'prohibited' items like glass bottles or cans (i.e. things you can throw).

MCG has a couple of Red Rooster and gourmet burger stands around the place too, much better than your standard generic stadium fare.

At the cinema all you need is a couple of punks to rip your ticket a young lass to sell you a chocktop and a bloke to start the film. At the football you need security, people to assist you to park, ticket booth operators, light tower operators, big screen operators, ground announcers, etc etc etc. And that doesn't even cover the staff required to maintain a stadium. I could go on......

Do families care? No. When they are looking at spending their expendable income they are looking at value for money. Cheap night Tuesdays $12 weekends $18 in Perth. I thought everything was expensive here, seems cinema is the last cheap thing we have!

Value for money doesn't mean the cheapest available option. If that was the case we'd all knick down to the local Harvey Norman and watch the game there. Prices are high for league but to compare them to flicks tickets is an unfair comparision due to the costs of putting on a game.

Ticket prices are only part of the problem.

Cheapest seats in town are at the largest, most expensive stadium - ANZ.

Parking is expensive, food and drink is expensive, lines are too long, you cannot buy real beer there. No point having a $20 general admin ticket if everything else about the experience is crap.

Take your kids to the GA area and they wont even realise they are at a footy match.

You want kids to get involved, to understand the sport & the enjoyment of live sport then you want decent seats, where they can hear & see the players and the game.

And those seats aren't the cheap ones.

The best value in this regard is the terraces at Parramatta Stadium. Pity there are so few daytime matches there anymore.

Me and my little cousin were able to bring henny penny into Energy Australia :)

Newcastle stadium seems to be amongst the best in the NRL for that from what I'm reading.

Previously the ticket prices were quite expensive so I'd only take the family to 3 or 4 matches a season and I might see 1 or 2 if I'm away on business.

Thus far under the new Tinkler scheme we've been to every match plus the Dragons game at the start.

I really think membership creates a sense of belonging and responsibility to attend. I really do think its worthwhile for the NRL to subsidise clubs membership packages and childrens tickets.
