Social media / blog / comment hate for the dragons

I am completely astonished at the amount of hate that the dragons generate. Nothing new for the murdoch press / fox to be anti-dragons...but the new phenomenon of blogs, facebook, online article comments hating on the dragons is just out of all proportion. Individually soward and gaz cop so much...but they are not your traditional baddies ie willie mason, hopoate...they are 'nice' guys. After one game they bring back the choke call.

The traditional comeback of saints supporters is that the rest are "jealous" - which has some merit - but this phenomenon is gathering steam as the finals draw nearer. I think dragons fans wear their hears higher on there sleeves and leave ourselves open for criticism - to be expected.However the whole overt, indiscriminate hater phenomenon is going too far - it's primarily been bred by the telegraph / fox and egged on by the fact that no club from the western suburbs of sydney have won a premiership in yonks and a fair chunk of these trolls are deadhead westy wasters trawling the net - but the amount of haters seems to be growing. I think it says something about the psyche of league fans.

Personally I think it will motivate the team - some us versus them mentality. they wont admit it until the victory lap - but they read this stuff. Don't be fooled into thinking they don't pay any attention.

I think your right...the individual crusades that we see now were impossible in the past...the microscope is on and we need to fill them pages. The internet is perhaps the biggest contributor - for all the good things it gives us...it becomes a voice for uneducated, angry, small minded individuals who can't get that air time from real life. Rugby league is a disproportionate chunk of this countries media and there is money on the line people.

The majority of dribble coming at us from rival supporters is mainly just from a bunch of fairweather fans. They're the type of people who you meet and ask them which footy team they support. You ask them what they thought of last weeks performance and then they tell you they didn't watch the game. Haha!

The media dribble, they're just agenda driven. As Sowie said in his interview with Wally post Grand Final victory when questioned whether it was the end of any criticism of St Illawarra in big games "they'll probably find something else to bag us about". The article in the Telecrap today about us snapping up 32% of the Grand Final tickets is proof of that. If it was the Storm fans snapping up that number it would have been portrayed as a fairytale comeback from a near death experience. Haha!

None of these people will ever understand what its like to be a St George Illawarra Dragon, either as a player or a fan. So we shouldn't bother justifying their dribble with an answer. As long as we band together that's all that matters. We are the best supporters. We are the best team no matter if we're first, last or middle of the table. As Dean Young said in an article about this time last year, they can kick us but it won't ever kill our spirit. We won't ever forget last year and we have a chance to once again lift the Provan/Summons trophy again this October. The baggers can write us off at their own peril.

While ever the hate is strong, we are going well. People will look for any reason to discredit or criticise a team that they know are a threat.

You shouldn't care what other fans think. Discussing it isn't going to change it, the hate subsided a few years ago when we weren't a good side, now it's as strong as ever... I for one love it, without the hatred, we aren't traveling well.

Oh and prey tell the rest? I don't see it as a problem...it does not bother me its an observation, a small time frustration / annoyance. Stupidity has always bothered me - no matter how trivial the subject - call me crazy. And I get sentimental about my football team. However... I am in a better position to judge what is a problem for me than you are mon frere.
