Good result.
All the bitching aside, we need to see the US get through to the WC, and with a quality coach and a large group of GP rule players still to come in, it looks like they are on track.
We just need to see how South Africa measures up - they are the mystery side of international League - they could be anything from dreadful to top quality.

It worries me that South Africa may recruit union players for the WCQs, go on to win a place in the WC, get thrashed by plenty in their pool games, and those players never to be seen heard of again.

I don't mind union players coming over to play Rugby League, but I believe there has to be a genuine commitment to the development of the code, and not for personal agrandissement.

If they are good enough to win the qualifiers, they are good enough.
I don't believe guys straight out of Union with little League experience could do it, no matter how good they are as athletes, but if they have quality players spending a season or two learning the game and that allows them to win the qualifiers - good on them.

It’s Hard to Keep a Game of Rugby League Down

August 28th, 2011
By Daniel Andruczyk

Despite a massive Hurricane (Hurricane Irene) hitting the East coast of the USA and Philadelphia getting a big brunt of it, it was not enough to cancel two of the penultimate events on the Rugby League Calendar in the United States. The Colonial Cup Between the USA Tomahawks and Canada Wolverines was brought forward a couple hours and the USARL Grand Final was brought forward by an hour. It shows that not even a hurricane can keep a good game of Rugby League down.

Dan - Were you at both games? Any obvious difference with the way the games were organized, atmosphere etc?

Yes, a massive difference... at this point in time the less said the better I feel... you could see the difference when you put a couple months work into something wrt under a weeks.

I think the Fight have now put up the games on Youtube so you can see it for yourself.

I am not sure how good a footage I got of the International as my camera was damaged by the rain, Hopefully I can get something. Not sure how the Canadians video came out, they had two Camera guys there as well. But no others cameras were there.

Having said that I was only at the 1st half of the International and the 2nd of the Grand Final... RL Review were paying me to cover both hence why I had to split it. originally with the 3pm kick off for both I was going to do the USARL and then colonial Cup, but when times changed I had to end up doing the Colonial Cup and then USARL, for anyone who was wondering.

And to answer those, who have seen the comments on my site, I am not on anyone's payrole except RL Review Magazine when they commission me to cover an event.

A little disappointing to see in those photos and based upon Niu's tweets that the Tomahawks team didn't even play in a USA jersey...

Possibly fortunate a crowd didn't turn up, that said, to begin with I don't understand the theory in this international being held on the same weekend as the USARL final in the same city... The Rugby League fan market in the states isn't big enough to try and split whilst I'm sure there are some fans on both sides who are either just AMNRL or USARL loyal, I bet there is a fair percentage who would have caught both games if they could...

A description of the 'international' match from someone on RLFANS:
70 year old referee, who refused to talk to the captains, apparently never once got them back 10 yards, astroturf pitch numerous sets of markings, no doctor, absolute shambles.
Niu and the AMNRL need to be de-affiliated with the USA national team ASAP, as if we didn't know that already. Look at the comments on Druzik's article, absolutely embarrassing yet again.

It's also a very serious situation. The Canadian captain broke his leg during the game, so for there to be no doctor on duty at the ground could have had serious and long-term consequences. For him personally, and for the AMNRL who would have a duty of care to anyone playing in a game they had organised. Bordering on criminal irresponsibility.

Is the AMNRL organising the RLWC Qualifiers or is the RLIF doing it? Because if it's the former then they need to step up a gear, or both they and the governing body could face serious difficulties if anything were to go wrong.

There was a doctor present at the game. Don't believe eveything you read on the internet.
