Maloney to leave Warriors after 2012

The Warriors have failed to retain playmaker James Maloney, with the five-eighth confirming he will continue his NRL career in Australia in 2013.

Maloney, who has developed into one of the competition's top playmakers since joining the Warriors from Melbourne in 2010, will see out the final year of his contract next season.

But while he did not reveal which club he would be going to, Maloney says the decision to move back across the Tasman wasn't an easy one and was based on a desire to be nearer family and friends.

The NSW-born Maloney, who is due to become a father for the second time, says he owes a lot to the Warriors, who signed him after just four first-grade games for the Storm.

"The club came up with a great offer but the big issue for us has always been our desire to go back home to Australia so we can be closer to our families and friends," he said.

"There was interest from other clubs but it's been a really tough decision to make and I know we'll miss the Warriors and all the supporters."

Maloney is relieved to have the issue sorted out so he can concentrate on next season under new coach Brian McClennan.

Warriors recruitment manager Dean Bell was disappointed the club couldn't retain Maloney, but the player had made it clear that family issues were the big factor in his decision.

His departure will be cushioned by the arrival at the end of next season of Kiwis utility Thomas Leuluai, who will be returning from Wigan to the club where he began his first-grade career.

Maloney, 25, has been the Warriors' first choice five-eighth in his two seasons in Auckland.

He has missed just two of the club's 53 matches during that period, both through suspension, and scored 394 points, including 20 tries.

Confirmed he's signed with the Roosters, that's a shame. Thought he would have fit in well at the Rabbitohs.

Cooper Cronk is now the prime target for 2013!

He was always the sole target, Maloney was just a decoy. I have it on good authority that Crowe has already had at least one meeting with Cronk.
ha ha is that why they only bought him two milkshakes.
Who is playing 7 next season? Souths throwing away yet another year in the hope of signing Cronk is 2013...

What would you suggest? Try and match parra's offer to keep Sandow?

Anyway, good signing for the Roosters. Looks like they will have one of the best set of halves in the comp in 2013.

James Maloney has signed a 3yr contract with the Rorters, once again they have kicked our arse in beatening us to a significant signing.

Could it be that we do not have a recognised first grade NRL half back and the Rorters do.

Beatening?

You guys should be used to taking a pounding from us you've been bending over for us for 20 years.

Have fun with Sutton

It is because no decent player or coach would ever want to go to 50uff$.

Surely your failure to sign players doesn’t surprise you. Would you want to play for a club that has won nothing in 40 years and has made the top 8th once in over 20?

Lol yeah and I hear that by 2014 50uff$ will sign the whole Kangaroos team making them an unbeatable force.

No one wants to go to your rubbish club. Deal with it.

He had a good year however he is not a young player , i think he had his prime was 2011 and maybe 2012. good luck to him , frankly i am glad we are not paying for a "marque" signing and waiting a year for him. A Cronk or a Foran is where our investment should go OR THE NEXT young one like them . Pay overs for them

Maloney is a solid player at best and not a difference maker. Souths have nothing to worry about missing out in his signing.
