CHELSEA AND VILLAS-BOAS PART COMPANY

Posted on: Sun 04 Mar 2012
Andre Villa-Boas has parted company with Chelsea Football Club today.
The board would like to record our gratitude for his work and express our disappointmentthat the relationship has ended so early.
Unfortunately the results and performances of the team have not been good enough and were showing no signs of improving at a key time in the season.
The club is still competing in the latter stages of the Uefa Champions League and the FA Cup, as well as challenging for a top-four spot in the Premier League, and we aim to remain as competitive as possible on all fronts.
With that in mind we felt our only option was to make a change at this time.
With immediate effect Roberto Di Matteo has been appointed first team coach on an interim basis until the end of the season.

I don't see the point of him being sacked, The team needs to be revamped and he needed time to change things. Any manager going there is like a death sentence!!

Well f**k me dead. Ridiculous. Payed him all that money and won't even give him the chance to shape the team to what he wants.

Commerzverein London, 8 managers under the Russian crook? Then they look set to replace him with Rafa who lasted about 12 minutes at Inter

Damnit.

The longer he was there the better it was for every other team fighting for top 4.

I can't see Benetiz doing any better. This is the guy that lost Xabi Alonso because he wanted to replace him with fckn Gareth Barry.

What a f**king joke Abramovich is.

Brought in a young coach to rebuild a poor, ageing side and when he does t get immediate results he gets the sack. FMD.

Who in the world would want the Chelsea job. A group of overrated, over the hill primmadonnas run the joint and when they don't get their way they get the manager sacked.

Rafa did well at LFC for a while and made some good signings that are still there today. He won't last Chelsea because they won't give him time to get the squad he wants and the spoiled brat brigade like Fat Frank won't accept lesser roles.

Inter are the same stupid organisation.

Chelsea had two wonderful managers in Mourinho and Ancelotti and f**ked both. They're the less successful Franco CF of English football

Rafa did well to a point, but alienating Alonso was a fatal error, he was the key to how we played back then.

Yeah Rafa had actually built a pretty decent squad, if torres and gerrard weren't injured so often and we had that little extra depth in attack we could have gone all the way.

Anyway I think sacking AVB is just f**kin stupid, hasn't even seen out a full year.
Abramovich thinks he's playing Fifa or Football Manager the way he tries to run the club.

Abramovich has swung his axe far too often. His decision to let go of Mourinho was his biggest mistake. His decision to replace Ancelotti, also highly questionable. However I Don't think Abramovich had any choice in this regard. I think he does blame the players for this shambolic season. Make no mistake there will be a huge clear out at Chelsea this summer. However He can not sack all the players mid season. Chelsea are in huge danger of missing the CL for next season which would be a disaster.

I also think AVB was overwhelmed by the job. Like you say, overpaid egos, pressure of the media, he looked rattled and out of his depth quite frankly. AVB made some incredibly naive decisions during his tenure. His man management skills were dismal and he came across as an arrogant tosser. The way he treated a couple of players was very naive and something an experienced man manager would not have done. Substitutions were pathetic and the way he set the team up was quite baffling. Trust me I know this side is full of overpaid hacks who are well past there best. However AVB did some truly baffling things. Playing Malouda week in week when he can't be assed? Playing the pathetic Bosingwa all the time?

There is no doubt the players should be embarrassed with their efforts. However AVB just was not up this job with his inexperience. LIke you say this is an ageing side, that is on the down. However it is AVB's job to get the best out of them and he failed miserably. It's a collective responsibility. He couldn't get the best out of any of the youngsters.

The fact that Abramovich has appointed a puppet on an interim basis until the rest of the season tells me that he knows what is coming next summer. I believe next summer, the one man who is bigger then these players, may come back and send half of them on their way. Mourinho said when he left Chelsea we wanted to conquer Italy and Spain before returning to England for a long time before managing Portugal.

Pretty much all options have been exhausted by Abramovich. Mourinho would face the ultimate challange of his career to come back here and rebuild the squad. However he is the one man who is big enough to do this. I think it is on the cards, boy I hope so!

AVB may lack experience but he is no mug.

Given the appropriate support, he will be a great manager IMO.

I can't understand why you would bother bringing him in in the first place if you aren't going to buy into his philosophy and project. It doesn't make any sense.

Its so stupid, I don't understand Abramovich's thinking. All the news/pundits I see are all saying that he realises that the squad needs freshening/rebuilding, but I'm CERTAIN this was said before AVB was hired AND that AVB was hired specifically to do this! Wasn't that the reason for sacking Ancelloti? That despite ok results that eyar they wanted to get a new, young manager to revamp the team? I honestly think nothing will be any different with the next manager. I know he has enough money not to care but ffs look at how much your spending! They should have stuck with AVB and let him sell off/buy who he wants and give him time. Without time NO-ONE will win a champions league with that club.

I thought it was funny (and true) what Rodgers at Swansea said when linked to the job, something like he is committed to Swansea and that why would he leave? He's trying to build up his career/rep, not destroy it. IT'S SO TRUE! No manager goes there (recently) and comes away from it positively, even Mourinho left in trying circumstances. That job is a deathwish. Good money, so thats probably why people do it, I guess.

Here's another thing I thin is insane. Abramovich, knowing his own impatience, should surely stop giving managers long term contracts because he only ends up having to pay them out. I know its probably for the pretense of 'building over time', but he should drop the pretense, do 1 year deals and if he's not happy cut them at no/less cost. For such a successful businessman I feel like he makes terrible decisions in football. Take Torres, was I the only one who thought Torres was done before he went to Chelsea? 50 f**kING MILLION for an out of form for like 12-18 months striker, who no-one else was bidding for! Idiocy.

The ridiculous managerial changes might actually be bettered by Inter recently. After Mourinho they hired and sacked Benetiz mid-season, replacing him with Leanardo who then left/was pushed (don't know the whole story there) at the end of the season. Replaced him with Gasperini, sacked him after about 3 months. Replaced him with Raineri for the rest of the season and now HE'S about to get sacked and replaced for the rest of the season by someone else before they sign a full-time manager at the end of the season. wtf is going on at that club!

What exactly was his philosophy or project? Because to me this became very difficult to get a grip on??

Sorry Hybrid, but he was a mug at Chelsea. The job was too big for him. If his project was to finish 6th then he was well on his way. Say what you like about the squad but they can do a lot better then that, they were 2nd last season and 1st the season before.

No surprise tonight, they were better set up, more organised, passed the ball quicker. Had more chances, pressed the ball better. Tonight was the best away performance in about 5 months and it came as no surprise. It was by no means a world beating performance however it was a professional performance.

AVB might very well do well again somewhere else. However he was very naive at Chelsea and overwhelmed by the job. I feel sorry for him and I'm sure some players didn't make it easy. However the right call was made in my opinion and i wanted AVb to succeed. Performances were just so bad and getting worse. There were zero positives in the last 3 months. His "project" as he kept waffling on about was failing.

The squad isn't very good, Eddie, that is the issue here. They were good a couple of seasons ago, but most other top sides have moved forward or improved and Chelsea has stagnated and is left with a roster where most of the key players, the difference makers, are past their best.

Unless I am seeing something not there, what is so good about Chelsea's roster? Ivanovic is average, Bosingwa rubbish, Luiz is absolutely terrible (can't believe the transfer fee this guy commanded), A.Cole is surely past his best and Terry is both overrated and past it. Gary Cahill was brought in in January, but purely based on this performances so far he is yet another in the long line of overrated English players who have moved to big clubs despite proving very little. And that is just their awful defense.

In midfield and up front, the only player of any class is Mata (and Sturridge) and neither have much of a supporting cast to work from. You could make a case for Essien but he has struggled with injury in the past two years. I don't need to mention the Torres mess. Am I missing something here?

You surely can't expect a young, relatively inexperienced manager to come in to a team that clearly needs rebuilding and demand instant success?

I am sure AVB has made some wrong decisions. His insistence on a high defensive line is one, but he clearly did need new personnel to fit that philosophy. IMO it is quite obvious that the problem lies with the players. The likes of Terry, Lampard, Drogba and Cole would be on pretty good wickets there and don't want to give it up easily. It is obvious there are a core of senior players at Chelsea who wield an unhealthy influence, if these players are not happy with the manager (Scolari's intensive training, AVB's 'tactics' i.e. dropping them) they have contributed greatly to him being sacked.

The reality is that United, City and even Tottenham have sides that are far superior on paper. For AVB to be in contention for the fourth spot is a decent achievement in his first year, IMO.

I agree with most of what you say. It's an ageing side that is on the down. However this squad should still never be losing games to West Brom, drawing to Wigan, losing at home to Villa, conceeding 5 at home etc etc. The bare facts are performances and results were getting worse by the week. It is his job to get the best out of the players, deal with the egos. It's a hell of a job to take on in Chelsea current malaise and probably better for an experienced manager.

I agree City, United and Spurs are all better. I also agree that the squad needs a complete overhaul. Undoubtably AVB has huge potential as a manager. It was very much a case of wrong place, wrong time. Thats why I say he was overwhelmed by the job. My argument is he had to go because Chelsea were no chance of finishing 4th and no CL for next season. Many press have said Abramovich actually apologised to AVB when he sacked him and is raging at some of the players. You can't sack 25 players mid season?

Abramovich was almost forced to act here. AVB handled some situation with senior players very poorly. Results and performances were getting worse and worse. AT the same time alot of players seem to be going through the motions. When Abramovich sacked Scolari, who also was headed for 5th or worse finish. Chelsea went on to lose 1 game for the rest of the season, win the FA cup and were plane robbed against Barcelona. They also won the double the year after that scoring 100 goals in the PL for the season. It turned out to be the right decision in that case.

There might not be much juice left in this Chelsea squad, however they have not become duds overnight. It's certainly not an ideal way to run a club, however Arsenal have gone 7 years with the same manager and never won a thing. Id argue Chelsea have had relative success during this time period. This sort of job was just too soon for AVB. He will probably come back to bite us in the long run however things were going I just don't think he could continue at Chelsea

As I predicted, the decision was the right one. The only mistake was that he was not sacked earlier. Chelsea would be no where the UCL Semi Finals with Villas Boas at the helm. The squad is an ageing one and a fading one, however with good man management you can still coax good performances from them. Stamford Bridge will be rocking when Barcelona visit in 2 weeks, and I expect a great Chelsea performance.

And quietly in Portugal AVB was crying himself to sleep.

You went about it the wrong way Andre. IN a way I felt very sorry for him, however it's all about man management and he failed miserably.

Like I said to Hybrid some of these senior players are the heart and soul of the club, not the cancer, and they can still mix it with the best.

Robbie Di Matteo you Legend!
