Storm, Dragons weigh up Origin effect
By Steve Jancetic and Guy Hand
16:00 AEST Fri May 11 2012

Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy is still learning how to cope with the effect of State of Origin on his NRL side, but for St George Illawarra, the pain is about to get a whole lot easier to handle.

A year after their NRL campaign hit a brick wall when the Dragons supplied eight players to the two Origin sides, the red and whites are facing the prospect of having zero representation in this year's series opener.
Winger-cum-fullback Brett Morris looms as the only Dragon with a legitimate shot at the NSW side, his selection likely to be determined by what Blues coach Ricky Stuart does with Parramatta star Jarryd Hayne.

While the Storm could provide up to six players for both sides, Bellamy is facing far greater certainty that at least his big three of Cooper Cronk, Billy Slater and Cameron Smith will be there for all three games.

And having seen the fatiguing effect Origin had on his side towards the back-end of the 2011 season, Bellamy said he would take measures to avoid a repeat.

"We'll be a lot more vigilant in that area, get them through that phase of the season okay, and get them nice and fresh at the end of the season," Bellamy said on Friday.

"It is (a testing time) without doubt.
"The last couple of years we haven't had as many as we used to have, but obviously our three Queenslanders are going to be there.
"And we'd like to think that Dane Nielsen and Justin O'Neill are going to be chances, and the two Ryans (Hoffman and Hinchcliffe) for NSW.
"Until we know how many we've got in there, during the Origin period and a little bit after the Origin period, we'll certainly be managing players as individuals."

The Storm have not lost a game heading into the final round before Origin takes effect, and are short-priced favourites to go all the way in 2012.
In 2011, the Dragons had lost only one of their first 10 games heading into the representative season - their form so good one bookmaker paid out on them to win a third straight minor premiership with more than half the season remaining.

But the Dragons won just three of their next 12 games to fade from premiership reckoning - with their plethora of representative stars struggling to find their best form down the stretch.
Still holding out hope that he and a few of his Dragons teammates will be there when the NSW team is named on Sunday, Morris believes the club is better placed for last year's experience.

"It was pretty hard last year, I think we all saw what happened," Morris said.
"... you never know how many are going to get picked, but I think we'll be better prepared for it this year.
"I think we've learned from last year how much it does take out of you physically and mentally."

I think the only one that will get picked is Weyman and it'll be his fault when NSW lose again (according to some on LU). The only thing the Storm will be worried about is injuries to their playmakers during Origin.

Merrin and Creagh make it in SOO. Somebody on here lost a bet. No Bmoz.

Hayne had a big game today, supposedly! I said in another post that as long as he is standing Stuart would pick him.

Why no Tariq Simms? I reckon he is as good as Williams, and, dare I say it, Ben Creagh.

I am also surprised that Watmough wasn't picked, he must be injured, not that I care.

Mate you are hilarious. So you try and have a crack at me, then like a true little skirt wearer you agree with me in another thread.

Please. Another nuff nuff enters the forum.

Getting picked for NSW in game 1 means jack shit. Once we are belted by QLD and the mass changes by Ricky "pick and stick" Stuart follow, I reckon we'll only be missing Creagh and Merrin for the one game (hopefully).

Well this is true. Creagh will be blamed for the loss. Very few people, and I mean very few believe he should have been selected.

Everyone has a go at you! It's the national pastime. Not every thing you say is wrong. Sometimes I agree with you and sometimes I don't, depends on what you say. So what was it this time? In my last post I didn't agree or disagree with you. It had nothing to do with you. It was about SOO not the Dragons.

Your comments are mostly about the signings or non-signings of every player we don't have.

And I am Scottish but how did you know I wore a kilt?

Hayne , Jennings and Farrar ... Just add Moltzen and you'd have more prima donnas than the Russian Ballet

NSW, once again change most of there team after saying last year that they would stick with the group of guys they had and try and build on it. What a joke you are Ricky Stuart. Sad to say Qld will dominate again :(

Stuart has got it all wrong - but most disappointingly, he has gone against his own mantra. So much for the 'pick a squad and stick with it' and the 'I'll never pick a player out of position' What a dickhead - and then he goes and picks a couple of losers like Hayne and Jennings - both prima-donnas that need a serious attitude adjustment.

Strange how we were all thinking we'd get off lightly this year during the origin period. But somehow we're now as badly off as we were last year. No Creagh, Merrin, Weyman, Scott, Prior and Fien. And if Morris gets picked for game 2......

I was hoping to get Creagh back after the Penrith game. Ricky said on Saturday after he announced the team that he will be naming the final 17 after the Monday game.

He loves Merrin, but I was really hoping we would get Creagh back.
