nice source, I found this bit interesting
'Countries of the United Kingdom is a term that can be used to describe England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. These four countries together form the sovereign state of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland, which is also described as a country.'

I understand the frustration but trying to pretend that Team GB somehow represents more than one nation is a weak argument.

They are made up more then one nation,

In rugby Union do Australia play Wales or Great Britain
Who does Wayne Rooney rep when he plays in the world cup...

Its just they feel being under the GB is better for then at the olympics.

Nah, thats got naff all to do with it.

As the inventors of football we were allowed to keep England, Wales etc. as seperate football teams. Which is the reason why until this olympics GB never played in the football as they are scared FIFA will stop that happening and make us play in World cups as GB.

GB is one country. Which may devolve into two if the Scots gain independance.

You know the rule : If you can't take it, don't give it.
Whilst this thread is clearly a troll it does show that Aussies really cannot take it.

You sure that's the reason ?

You play a lot of other sports as seperate countries as well ( cricket , rugby union , rugby league)

Is it really any surprise the GB have done well here? They are the host nation...I don't think too many host nations haven't done really well (there's been 1 or 2 think). Anything less than a great performance would see this dead empire fall into anarchy. When all is said and done, and the Games are over, I know where'd I'd prefer to live and I'll also put safe $$$ that Team GB will be back to its usual crap performances at Rio.

Yes.

We invented them sports to. ;-)

In cricket we play as England and Wales. Rugby league was GB for a long time and Union play as separate nations due to the class distinctions between English RU and Welsh/Scotland RU (they were seen as very seperate back in the day).

Plus, no one wants to merge the teams in them sports, where as in football technically the English, Welsh and Scotish FAs should merge, but are allowed to remain separate because of our standing as creators of the modern game. Its in the Fifa Statutes that were drawn up when FIFA was created.

We just drew level with the amount of golds we got in China. So its not totally unrealistic. We won't win as many in Rio, but we should get a few.

Judging by the pre-game comments about ruining our party i'd say there was at least one country suprised at our success.

Good job really, Aus not choking on the big stage would really see the "dead empire" falling into anarchy.

i agree that australia hasnt gone all that well at the london olympics, but its a bit amusing that some poms would brag about beating australia when australia normally dominates the poms at sport. the aussies will probably beat the poms in 2 years at the commonwealth games. let the poms enjoy it whilst it lasts

Poor Poms. They've been losing to Australia for so long they've forgotton their humility. What do they say about things that go up again?

Australia is doing perfectly well on a per capita basis. Australia led the way in the Western World in funding Olympic sports and benefitted. All that has happened is the rest of the world copied them.

In the 1950s, Australia were not a great sporting nation, in the 1990s they were. Except, people were fitter and slimmer in the 1950s, so that is a nonsense really.

The UK spent money on Olympic events very wisely and have their reward. Both Australia and GB are producing finer elite athletes, whilst the majority of the population play increasing less sport.

Well done Oz for leading the way, well done GB for catching up and going further. Now lets see the populations' health worked on.

How can you say that Australia is doing ok on a capita basis, the Scots have contributed 6 gold medals to Team GB and they only have a population of 5 million.

My home county of Yorkshire has 5 gold medals from about 5 million also.

Your points are all redundant because all Poms are ugly.

LOL This thread is hilarious.

One Brit starts a thread gloating about how much better GB are doing than Australia, and then two dozen Aussies accuse him of being a sore winner...by being a bunch of sore losers, trotting out the same tired old lines.

Im not sure whats worse...using the line "bad teeth", or that people replied actually thinking it was funny.

And for the record, when we (Great Britain) beat Australia in sport we love to give you shit. And having lived in Australia for 12 years i can also say with confidence that its a national pastime here for Aussies to give England/Great Britain shit when they beat us in sport.

It's called banter. Some are good at it, using wit and a light-hearted nature. Some however prefer to whinge and talk about bad teeth, population differences, being convicts etc. But we can't all be funny i guess...
