Is Marshall a great player?

tbh I haven't watched the whole game but he seems to be carrying the Tigers on his back. Not successfully, but still.....

If he's on his game he's the best in the comp. Not on his game enough though, especially this season. As others have pointed out, coaching doesnt help his cause at present. Needs a halfback badly (and a fullback doesnt hurt either).

Doesnt have to be a star either, just someone who can do the organising and be a decent link between Farah and himself.

He didn't do much wrong today tried his backside off and still produced a few try assists in one of the most disgraceful team performances of the year.

He needs 2 things:
- a coach who won't be scared to tell benji how it is
- to shut the f**k up about what he's gonna do before he inevitably fails to do what he says he was gonna do

yeah, I agree he hasnt developed or re-invented himself to become a true great in a position other than# 6. To me, that's a make of a truely great player, someone who masters more than just one position.

.

Pretty stupid pov, if your great in a position, why would you be moved ?

Benji is who he is, ultra-talented, skillful as all f**k but not a great player and never will be.

He's a great player. The only issue is that he needs a decent halves partner for once. When you are partnered with Fulton, Moltzen and Lawrence then you have a problem. Two of those are good players but they aren't halves. One of them is crap. At least get Sironen in there. It's pretty hard to dominate when your team has only two major points of attack and your one of them.

Actually the more I think about it he was the only shining light in a Triple T (terrible tigers team)

He was the only one trying and creating opportunities, came up with 6 line breaks assists to boot.
It's a pity his team mates couldn't follow in his foot steps...

He's been horrendous in D this season. He's a good player but like his coach is f**king made of Teflon, never cops it from the media etc and certain channel 9 commentators blow their load when he does something semi decent. Compare that to Jarryd Hayne who's carrying a reserve grade side on his back and is scrutinized and blamed for every little thing.
Benji could let in 4 tries in D, but the media will more likely talk about a consolation try he set up with an unnecessary flick pass, Hayne could set up 4 tries but the media will focus on the one try he let in as a result of lazy positional play and they'll say he's disinterested.

His defense needs to improve big time to be a great player. Lockyer's defense wasn't the best but by the end of his career it was solid.

Been involved in league since the 60's.

Benji is a great player... All the greats had some deficiencies.

The skills he has are one of a kind. History will be kind to Benji.

Give him a genuine halfback and I think he'd easily be considered as one of the top 10 players in the comp. By the time he finishes his career I expect he'll be considered one of the best kiwis ever.

At the moment though he's doing way too much structural work for the team and it's just not his go, we wont see the best of him until Sheens finally signs a halfback. Doesn't even need to be a good halfback just one who will do all the ugly stuff... Shane Perry much? Jeff Robson? ANYONE!

Marshall may have the odd brian explosion but seriously. I would never swap Marshall with Soward, Soward dreams that he has 50% of the ball skills that Marshall has.

I watched the 2005 Tigers season review DVD earlier this year, Marshall was incredible, pity he has lost some pace since but he is still one of the best players in the NRL.
Soward's composure in the 2010 SF against you guys was the difference between the two teams.

Both players offer very different things, Benji can cost you as many games as he wins though, yet the commentary team will cream themselves over a moment of brilliance. Fantastic player to watch, not a great regular club season player though.

Of course he is, & a great ambassador for our game as well.

Having said that, I do get sick of commentators / media flogging on about him & his Tigers.

f**k off...

Channel Nine love Hayne, not as much as Benji, but they still suck his dick.

In 30 years most of the people who saw him play and are still around will be talking about him. I'd imagine the phrase "He's no Benji Marshall" will get a fair few runs.

Scott Sattler still gets a mention nearly 10 years on and he was a plodder who made one great tackle...
