OLGR sails to Vikings Sports Club's rescue

Only just read this in the local rag at work.

http://parramatta-advertiser.wherei...-racing-sails-to-vikings-sports-clubs-rescue/

Parramatta Advertiser said:
OPPONENTS to the sale of the Vikings Sports Club at Dundas Valley now have the support of the Office of Liquor, Gaming and Racing.

Co-president of the Telopea Chamber of Commerce and club member Michael Maughan wrote to the OLGR in May, concerned about the proposed marketing of the sale of the club by Parramatta Leagues Club.

He said it was "folly" to close the core asset, given the planning approvals handed to the region and the expected development in coming years.

Mr Maughan received a response last month from the OLGR, which had sought legal advice regarding the issue.

The legal advice concluded that, while Parramatta Leagues Club's constitution "precludes members without three years membership from attending and voting at the AGM", the Registered Clubs Act 1976 did not allow clubs to determine who could vote on the issue of disposal of core property.

It concluded that the OLGR was of the view that since the club did not invite all ordinary members to attend and vote on the proposed sale of the property, the resolution to sell the property - determined by a close vote of 88-84, which was disputed twice - was invalid.

Businessman Tom Issa, who is running on a ticket with former Parramatta Eel Steve Sharp in the leagues club's board elections in April next year, said the response from the OLGR was "a big win".

He said the leagues club needed to work more on making the Vikings a family-friendly place to be, where staff were responsible for the club's success, rather than letting it gradually drop off.

Mr Maughan agreed, saying he wanted the Vikings club to be handed to the community to run, with the leagues club as a financial backer.

"We're hoping they have seen the folly of their ways and will embrace a new vision for Dundas Valley Vikings," he said.

Parramatta Leagues Club chief executive Bob Bentley did not respond to questions from the Advertiser.

Looks like Stagger did all that counting for nothing.

Wouldn't Bob or the board or their advisors have known this before the voting?
Were they trying to pull a swifty? Or did they just overlook it?

Are these guys serious, leagues club pays the bills and let the community run it!
Bit of a worry if Steve Sharp is teaming up with these guys, poor business sense in my opinion!!!

Hopefully this election there will be a media for candidates to express their views and desires for the club. The last election I only received information from Glen Duncan.

Businessman Tom Issa? It looks like he is basically a used car salesman. :sarcasm:

 Yeah that's what I thought. Way too many dodgy candidates on both sides of the fence for my liking. Surely there must be a better way of running our club than to put it in the hands of nuffies ?

well someone needs to run the club so at this stage I have found no candidates outside the current directors that are worthy of nomination, to me..it's the better the devil you know at this stage.

Why is that do you think?
Why are we struggling to get what we perceive to be 'decent' candidates to nominate for our board?

That's easy. Supporters who have the experience to assist the club would not want the politics that come with the position. Who in their right mind would want to be involved in the dirty pool that both sides played in 2009 ?

well we're still a about 3 months from the FC ellections and the only people who have put their hand up to challenge these guys are Sharp and Issa as part of their ticket and our dear friend Tony Anstee as an independent who I'm sure will do an admirable job,

I'm hopeful we'll know more in the next month or 2 but at the moment it's not filling me with any cofidence at all.

It was interesting to see the personal insults and abuse unfold on the other site as soon as I announced my intentions. I must admit that although I was prepared for it that it's certainly not pleasant and I can see how it could put other potential candidates off.

Thanks Stagger. I want nothing more than for our club to be placed in the hands of competent and sincere candidates and it's a shame that we dont seem to have a great deal of options. I'm surprised it's taken Sharp so long to announce the others running with him.
