Sky (again)

Got the latest Skywatch mag today. There's a two-page spread showing "a glimpse of what to expect in 2013 on Sky Sport".

There is absolutely no mention of any Rugby League at all. Considering how important the NRL coverage is to their subscriber base that's a bit of a surprise.

Have they lost the rights????

Conspiracy theory time - I got a call from them before Xmas offering a free upgrade to MySky as long as I commit to a 12 month contract. I wonder if they're doing this just in case they're about to lose a whole lot of customers...?

Don't spoil my conspiracy theory!!

I'm still suss, Sky don't have the best PR record (remember when they moved NRL from the UHF channel?) and in recent times they've been pretty up-front in the Skywatch about which things they have "yet to secure coverage for" e.g. the Blackcraps tour, the All Blacks trip to Europe, etc.

Nobody else in NZ can match sky in the money department. As much as I'd like to see them lose it and it go to FTA, it's just not possible.

The the NRL could be playing hardball and want more money from skytv for the next deal.

I remember the move from UHF VERY well! And yes, they were not upfront about it at all, only officially announcing it a week before season start, and being forced into it by Steve Killgallons bust of them.
Ironically, the office girl who told me two months earlier UHF was losing the league, got reprimanded for it- the only one of the lot of them telling the truth.
In this case though, I really can't see them losing the NRL/Origin games- and normally I would think they wouldn't care about Internationals, but they might in WC year. I reckon the possibility is the NRL is screwing them for more money, so be prepared for that being passed onto the customer...;-)

What ever happened to the days when channel 2 or 3 used to show a FTA game on Friday, Saturday and Sunday nights?

Well after the year the Warriors just had would you be promoting your TV channel by using thier images?
That therory is probably wrong because they would not be advertising Cricket then I suppose.

I read that the RU provincial champions were in decline last season both on the box and at the ground, possibly due to scheduling but how was the Super Rugby feared for TV ratings and crowds over the past few years.

The Warriors will always be second to S15 however in a good year for the Warriors I'd assume they'd out rate the old NPC comp?

Yeah they do and Rugby League had one of the biggest uptakes of people joining teams, clubs etc in NZ ever in 2012.

That would've been on the back of the 2011 GF and a few good years, I hope the disaster of the 2012 season hasn't done too much damage but I'm sure SKY will mention that TV-wise the ratings were a disaster.

Slightly OT, with the up take last season in players and the junior program's set up by the Warriors owners its a mere speed bump if playing numbers and TV ratings drop this coming season

I also think the secondary schools championship being on TV as well as the Monday night games towards the end of the year will generate a lot of interest.
Now, if the Warriors can find some form the world's our oyster.

dead right, if we were to win a g/final, it would be downright scary.

If we have another season like last season, it would be pretty scary too..

patronage and viewing figures for S15 and ITM Cup hit record lows this season just gone,,,, nows the time.

I think they had form at the start but no defence plan and lack of fitness took its toll after about a week or so.
Hopefully Elliot has a defence plan that works to some degree and it looks like the new fitness trainer/coach is earning his paycheck by thrashing a bit of fitness into them, which I'm sure they will thank him for (although probably not right now or in the forseeable future).

You look at all the games where they let 16-18pts as a head start or gave up the same in the last few rounds, that was mainly fitness along with a lack of caring, however if they are being thrashed at pre-season to get the fitness up, along with another season under their belt for the youngsters and raw talent we could be pushing for a 5th or 6th finish and a home final
