St George Illawarra Dragons approach Melbourne Rebels' Kurtley Beale

DESPERATE St George Illawarra have emerged as possible suitors for troubled Wallabies star Kurtley Beale should the Australian Rugby Union tear up his contract. Beale's future in the 15-man code could be determined as early as next week after he punched Rebels teammate Cooper Vuna and captain Gareth Delve in a drunken altercation in Durban last Sunday morning.
While NSW Waratahs coach Michael Cheika hinted a return to Sydney could be on the cards, The Daily Telegraph understands the Dragons have already shown early interest.
Those close to Beale have predicted for the past year the talented but wayward 24-year-old would return to rugby league, which he had played as a junior.
There was speculation yesterday cashed-up Penrith, which has $1 million to spend after missing out on signing Cowboys playmaker Johnathan Thurston, could also enter the race - not least because Beale hails from Mount Druitt in Sydney's west.

But Panthers insiders last night denied they had even had a discussion about Beale. Drew Mitchell voices support for former teammate Kurtley Beale.

Dragons coach Steve Price and chief executive Peter Doust did not return calls or texts, and while it is very early days it is believed an official from the club has made the first tentative approach.
St George Illawarra is desperate for a playmaker in the face of a winless start to the season.
They are resigned to the fact it has missed out on sacked Canberra problem child Josh Dugan.
"It's always lingering in the back of my mind,'' Beale said of playing rugby league in an interview in January.
"I'm a massive fan of rugby league and I played it all my junior career and I'm always switching channels to watch it on the weekend. Hopefully later on, in the years to come, I will be able to put my hand up and have a crack at it.''

In other words, the telecrap insinuated the Dragons approached Beale, but have absolutely nothing from any official at the club to back their claims up lol. Priceless stuff....

Shouldn't we try to get a half decent game out of the Beale we already have before we start chasing another?

Tell me about it. The pure lack of any ACTUAL journalistic skill in this entire article is absolutely pathetic! They really do have 0 integrity over at News, and tend to just pull crap out of their arse's... Just had to share it with you guys for the pure lolz and facepalmidge.

I suggested this weeks ago. He'd be a sensation. Great option IMO

Are you the Daily Telegraph's mystery Dragons source? You know, when they don't have any comment from the coach, CEO, players, recruitment officer, or anyone remotely related to the club?

As soon as another team is also linked then we have no hope. Even if Mounties show interest Saints would probably lose out to them.

That was also my thought as soon as I read it.

The media link us to the player, when there never was a 'real' link in the first place. Then the player either decides to stay where they are, and do rehab or whatever, or gets picked up by a club with the cash and more stability around their coaching situation.

We are more chance of picking someone up where there has been no media reports whatsoever of it happening. Once it hits the papers, then forget it.

I think it makes it worse that every player is linked to us, as any potential recruit will assume that there has to be a reason nobody wants to come here, therfore wouldn't even consider a move to the dragons.

I'll be the first to admit it's getting pretty tiresome hearing how every man and his dog are linked to our club. It's important to remember to just take it with a grain of salt though our club is an easy target at the moment inparticular for the following reasons:

-It's a known fact that we have room under our salary cap to sign these players.
-With our poor on the field results everybody is going to be a 'solution' for us to start winning again.
-We are the most popular Rugby League club in the entire galaxy or as Peter Doust would say "we are a very marketable brand"

We keep the current on field rubbish up for a few seasons and corporate sponsors will ask St George who???????

We are much like the wallflowers at the dances I went to in the bush. Nicely dressed up in our red and white ballroom gown, siting on the bench waiting for an offer to trip the light fantastic, but of course it does not come.

The other girls (teams) are gliding across the floor with the would be suitors eager to taste of their passion. And here we are, do we lower our standards for an encounter or maintain our dignity and miss out yet again.

I have no idea how the Dragons are viewed within NRL inner circles.

But it seems we do struggle to attract players (except during the Bennett years when the lure of the coach was a big incentive). Obviously a big junior base has also been a factor.

I've been following the Dragons for 30 years and the last big name I can remember we signed was Steve Rogers.

Surely there isn't a problem with our brand?

Dell was a big name signing although he was well into his twilight years. Maybe Scott Gourley would be classified as a semi big name signing? But your point is well taken. We rarely do go after big names and when we do, we don't convert on a lot of them.
