What's your favourite war movie?

Just thought it was slow and generally dislike that grainy, gritty style with long, meaningful pauses overabundant. Same reason I didn't like Gran Torino. The good bits in it were good but the flashbacks were generally boring IMO.

I can dig that. Cheers for your response mate.

But it did spawn the parody in Meet the Feebles so it gets credit for that.

Apocalypse Now is indeed the granddaddy of all war movies. Full Metal Jacket is typical Kubrik brilliance. Kellys Heroes in indeed one of the best WW2 movies and I'll also add a lesser recognised Vietnam flick The Boys In Company C which actually had R. Lee Ermey playing the Drill Instructor about 10 years before Full Metal Jacket.(I was hoping the Grab Your Nuts scene would be up on Youtube but I didn't see it. More reason to watch the whole movie).

The Quiet American (1958) based on the brilliant Graham Greene novel gives a different perspective to the Vietnam War as it takes place before the conflict begins.

All Quiet On The Western Front (1930) This is the first adaptation of the classic novel and definitely the best.

Heap of foreign movies especially on the Eastern Front. European movies also have access to a lot of the real tanks as well. You won't see 1960s and 70s tanks in them.

When Trumpets Fade is the only movie I know of about the Hurtgen Forest where the US got their arses handed to them in a drawn out battle before the Battle of the Bulge. It's a neglected battle which the US generals would like to be kept forgotten.
Great movie! Really solid cast too.

My two favourites are probably slightly cliched in Gallipoli and Saving Private Ryan, but one I don't think anyone has mentioned that I think is a very good movie is Hacksaw Ridge. It sometimes leans into my favourite; I think it's a very good movie.

Haven’t seen it. Will need to give it a search.

Operation Crossbow.
The Heroes of Telemark.
Battle of the Bulge.
The Battle of Britain.
Midway (Both the 1976 and 2019 versions).
Enemy at the Gates.
The Guns of Navarone.
The Dam Busters.
The Great Escape.
Stalag 17.
Bridge over the River Kwai.
Operation Mincemeat.
Hacksaw Ridge (based on the true story of 7th Day Adventist Desmond Doss who served as a combat medic in WW2 and refused to carry any weapons).
Where Eagles Dare (this is a ripper of a movie which goes for 2 hours and 38 minutes of action and suspense. Richard Burton and Clint Eastwood in the lead roles are superb).

2 that would be in consideration for me are both based on true stories, and from reading seem reasonably accurate despite where they go are
The 12th Man
The Captain

Both well worth watching

This ones a beauty. Tommy Lee Jones is a returned Vietnam Vet who is sick of the way he is being treated so he takes over New Yorks Central Park. The authorities can't budge him so they resort to bringing in a mercenary and his VC partner to try and flush himout.
