Actually, he said he would explain himself at another break in the game.

I didn't see it as a big deal. Refs send captains away all the time if they think they are trying to slow the game down.

I think it's a huge issue. Ricky talked about refs going into games with preconceived ideas about our team. I think this proves it.

In any case, he had every right to talk to the ref. Would the ref have said that to Sutton? I doubt it.

We'll have to agree to disagree on this one.

I cant see how it proves the refs have a preconceived idea about our team. I think the only thing it proves is that he wasn't willing to discuss an issue there and then with Mannah. I have seen refs do the same thing with countless other players.

Players deliberately try and slow the game down by going to the ref after every minor issue so refs have to be mindful of this. As a result, players will often get sent away. What happened to Mannah is not particularly unusual.

Ricky said they were all penalties so let's just say hypothetically he coached our team not to give away dumb penalties then even if the refs only blew say 5 against the rabbits we'd still have an advantage .

No, I'd rather the ref address the issue instantly.

And when will it be a better time??? When the captain is off the field or end of the game.

If the ref is obliged to address every issue, regardless of how irrelevant or insignificant then we will significantly slow the game down.

I think the neater solution is for it to be removed completely. I am sick of seeing players going up to the ref and having a whinge. Get on with the game!

I agree that the game is a mess at the moment. 12 penalties in the first half ? Who wants to watch a game that has a penalty every 3 minutes ?

Every try they went upstairs.

Most scrums were halted because players are not binding or the ball was not put in correctly. Who cares when they are not contested ?

I have to say the most amusing thing about this thread is ME several attempts at fishing didn't really get any bites.

on topic though we have won 5 of 14 penalty counts so far winning 2 of those games.
Of the 5 we won 4 were at Parra stadium and 1 at Mudgee
We have received a total of 95 penalties and given away 111 for an average of 6.8 for and 7.9 against per game. We have won 1 penalty count by 4 and lost 4 by 4 or more.

My gripe concerns two areas:

(1) why tell the captain "I'll discuss it with you later?" What does it achieve? There was a penalty then and there. It is very rare to see Cam Smith or Mick Ennis get treated that way.

(2) Why are other captains allowed to question the ref and slow the play down, but we aren't? To me, this points to something.

Personally, I think Stuart hit the nail on the head when he said we are easy targets because we suck. Nobody will question us losing the penalty count, but the way our captains are treated is a joke. Obviously our captains should respect the ref - but if Tim Mannah isn't the nicest and most respectable bloke in the NRL, then I'm a monkey's uncle.

Seems to me that refs think they can treat our team like shit and get away with it because we suck. I'm not saying they cost us the game. But here's good of thought;

At one stage, the Bunnies were defending 20 out from our line. I heard the ref call a Bunny for being offside (I think it was Luke). Like ignored the ref and made the tackle. No penalty. Moments later, one of our guys (Harrison, I think) got pinged for offside without warning. It's double standards.

As mentioned several times, it stops the game being bogged down in a discussion and allows it to flow.

It is very rare to see Cam Smith or Mick Ennis get treated that way.

Perhaps. But it does happen to them does it not? Apart from yesterday's game, can you recall another time where a ref has said "I'll discuss it with you later" to Tim Mannah?

(2) Why are other captains allowed to question the ref and slow the play down, but we aren't? To me, this points to something.

We are afforded the same courtesy as any other captains. To say that we have not been able to question the ref at all is just plain wrong. I have seen all of our Captains do it on multiple occasions this year.

Personally, I think Stuart hit the nail on the head when he said we are easy targets because we suck. Nobody will question us losing the penalty count, but the way our captains are treated is a joke.

It isn't a conspiracy!

The reason we get penalised more than other teams is because we haven't mastered the art of controlling the ruck in the way that other teams have. We lie all over players to slow them down rather than wrestling first and getting players on their backs.

If our coach focused on the above rather than whinging about refs the issue of penalties would soon disappear.

But here's good of thought;

In every game we play, opposition fans could probably also come up with similar examples of where they have been hard done by. Swings and roundabouts.

Gary quick question.

Have u ever heard a ref say to another captain, I'll discuss it with u later??

Otherwise let's agree to disagree.

I have never seen a ref change his mind after a captain questions the decision...it is clearly time wasting.

I would prefer the ref to mark the spot first and let the other team play on. If the captain wants to have a chat he can however his team will be defending a man down while he is doing it. There are 2 refs on the field so the other ref can officiate while the captain is having his chat.

If they did this then the whole problem goes away, there are enough stoppages in the game where the captain can have his say to the ref about what is happenning without wasting everyone's time. (for us it would be while we are waiting for the other team to take its conversion!!!)

I don't see them here complaining about it, so it clearly doesn't happen.

But seriously, how f**king weak and lazy are our tackles? You watch any other game a week, one/two blokes wrap up the ball and third bloke grabs the legs, tackle done, good wrestle and one of the high tacklers gets back to line, the other goes to 2nd marker allowing the leg tackler to jump up and get to 1st marker. We have Fui & MK making tackles, MK (the leg tackler) trying to get to 1st marker only to have Fui already there and instead of one of them taking a step backwards, they stand f**king side by side?

Then we have Morgs holding on for his life around a players bootlaces, on our tryline looking like said player wouldn't lose a second's pace, able to freely pass to whoever they want for what seemed an eternity for an outside watcher and yet no one thought "perhaps I should run in and smash that bloke to the ground while he is at least slowed down somewhat".

FMD it's not f**king tip. Can't touch me, I'm at my base. Lazy f**king shits

Im of the belief that stuart was simply brought in to get structures in place for another coach to come in and take us further. He did it with the blues. He is here to strip the foundations down and start again. Another coach will then come in and stick with his structures (possibly Parrish or Pay) like Daley and take us on to become a successful club again.

This one area where we really miss Hindy...his ability to complete the tackle and work the player in order to give our defence time to get back and still get back into marker position in time for the play the ball was phenomenal...very rarely got penalised as well!!!

Spot on.

If The NRL isn't going to change the rules, then the reality is that we need to start being a bit smarter about how we control the ruck.
