I wouldn't say that The Wire was more original.

And are you trying to tell me that McNulty wasn't as flawed as the characters you described on The Shield?

TBH if I wanted social commentary, I'd watch a documentary. It's the reason I hate reality TV - I don't watch TV for "real" situations. I watch TV to see how well writers can create a fictional scenario that makes me care.

The Wire isn't a bad show - not at all.

But neither is The Shield. They're both good.

But Fawlty Towers eats them both for breakfast, anyway, so it's all academic.

McNulty was an egomaniac but he broke the rules to try and take down the bad guys.

Fawlty Towers is something really special. I've watched the entire series so many times. One of my Doctors looks like John Cleese.

The Wire was always going to go for only five seasons, they made their point and then stopped because that's what smart people do.

Not necessarily - while I agree that it's better to follow Fawlty Towers' lead and quit while you're ahead, if you have competent writers, you can make a show go on for many more seasons.

I think it wrapped up nicely in the end, and they probably didn't have any stories left to tell, but they conceivably could have gone on for another season or two.

How about this comparison:

The Wire > Blue Bloods?

That's the reason I really enjoyed both The Wire and The Shield - the protagonists were almost anti-heroes. Vic Mackey also ended up doing the right thing, but he went about it in often illegal ways.

But I think that, even to this day, Fawlty Towers is the funniest show I've ever seen. Supremely brilliant comedy. John Cleese is a genius IMO. Obviously Connie Booth was special, too, but John Cleese was the main drawing card.

I don't watch Blue Bloods, sorry.

The thing which I always appreciated about the Wire is they didn't try and make it seem like cases are solved super quickly. Shows like CSI, Bones and Law and Order. They spend an episode on a case and it's wrapped up nicely.

What made the Wire really special wasn't so much the main character being an anti hero or its grittiness. It was that they showed you story from the viewpoints of the criminals. They helped you make sense of they ended up where they were. For me season 4 was the best. Not only because of Hamsterdam, but because of the way the kids developed.

Yeah my dad introduced me to Fawlty Towers. Introducing me to Fawlty Towers and AC/DC and Iron Maiden were probably the best things he ever did for me and that includes giving me life

I like Tom Selleck, so I watched one episode of Blue Bloods...And it suuuuuucked.

It is true that The Wire was a very good show. Bones and CSI suck. I think the thing that people enjoy about Law & Order is that often in the show the bad guys get off due to technicalities in the law.

But you're not wrong - The Wire was a good show. Definitely a good watch.

The Wire is the best show in tv history.
The fact it's based around real life, the acting, the different portrayals of life..it delivered it all.

OK, new FFB rules. Cliffy came up with an idea.

All new ideas must submitted to a special FFB sub committee which consists of Cliffy and myself.

Didgi is our legal representative and Dani is our secretary, so you guys have to be nice to Dani as well, and I mean you'll have to be reeeeaallly nice.

First Item on the agenda will be Dragon2010.

For bringing the FFB into disrepute you may be forced to spend a night with Bunniesman.

Cliffy and I will discuss this at the next sub-committee meeting and we shall be asking Dani to provide a full report on your behaviour.

Time to start sucking up.
