NRL encourages television broadcasters to do things differently for 2014

The problem is nothing to do with the schedules or the games or anything to do with that.

The NRL as a product has deteriorated at an alarming rate in the last few years. So many once passionate fans such as myself can't bother to sit through a neutral game because the game has changed. This wrestling crap and constant horror refereeing makes the game unenjoyable to watch. I still love rugby league as much as ever, but I've really lost interest in the NRL competition and I'm definitely not the only one.

Yeah, I'll agree with that. Can't remember the last time I sat down and watched a regular season neutral game just because it was on. I'm nowhere near as interested as I was 5 years ago.

The thing I can't stand now is they aren't football players anymore, they're 'athletes'. 15 out of 17 players on a team have very similar body shapes. The specialization of individual positions is gone. It's not the game I grew up with and I don't get anywhere near as much enjoyment from watching it.

I have to agree. For me, the introduction of 2 refs sped the decline IMO. Ive gone from watching every game each game (and replays) to watching nothing. The referring in all games, not just Roosters has frustrated me to not bother.

Would have to agree, this year especially. Not a Warriors supporter but thank god for them, at least they play some ad-lib footy. The Shoulder charge being banned has been a mess. I accept that its banned and not coming back but they are not even penalizing the correct tackles. They are banning just tackling with your shoulder (see the Danny Buderus suspension or the Dugan one). Utter embarrassment.

Find myself watching more 90's, or 00's game replays than current NRL.

Not trying to sound sarcastic here, but the NRL trying to make the game safer for players has taken a lot of the fun out of it for fans.

who is scared?

and Fox don't give two f**ks about ratings

they make money off subscriptions

Yeah they do make money of subscriptions. But is the viewing numbers for thei NRL on Fox Sports dropping because subscriber numbers are dropping or are people just turning off from watching the NRL? If it's the former then it's a problem for Foxtel. If it's the later then it's a problem for the NRL.

People stop going to games for a number of reasons, such as weather, family commitments, illness and costs. Outside of the weather, most of the reasons can be fixed.

People stop watching league on TV, especially on Freg to Air because they have lost interest in the game. Once that happens its hard to get them back.

can't clarify it.

but I seriously doubt it.

if you want to see HD sport, tune into the NFL on ONE HD from 3am tomorrow morn. 3 live games back-to-back-to-back..............all in glorious HD, and the American broadcasters have been providing it for several years now.

and yeah, they have one play commentator and one special analyst commentator in the booth, and a sideline lackey giving injury and halftime updates...........that's it. no BS.

So bloody spot on.

Parra, Tigers, Penrith, Dragons, Brisbane all being in the bottom half of the ladder really isn't healthy for the game. Teams like Cowboys, and Sharks coming into the 8 isn't going to boost ratings

And all being given too much coverage in the second half of the season. It's the time of year you want the best teams being televised, not teams with little skill going through the motions.

People become interested if their side is doing well, do you blame Eels fans for losing interest in the game.

The Eels had a massive support base to rival the St George army.

A little success and they will return.

How bad is the Footy Show thus far. All cross promotion rubbish, you would hardly know the prelims were on.

The product is still awesome; shoulder charge or not.

Its all on Channel 9 FFS:

1. Commentators are sh!t.
2. Broncos monopoly on friday nights is sh!t.
3. Footy show is sh!t.
4. SD is sh!t.
5. Delayed games is sh!t.

AND MOST IMPORTANTLY:
6. Channel 9 CEO is sh!t.

^ Agree with a lot of those points.

Hence why their coverage is terrible.

They dont have good commentators, the delayed matches just drag on with the 10,000 commercial breaks.

Plus, I dont understand why they show the team lists in quick timing, rather than Gould or somebody going through the players one by one. If you have Foxtel IQ, you virtually have to rewind it to double check who's in the 17, but there was one occassion where they missed the entire bench.

Ch 9 have always forced the NRL for matches to be played at a certain time to suit TV ratings.

Well its time the NRL stepped in and told Ch 9 to improve its coverage.
