o'donnell agreeing to match payments wouldn't be a good idea - from his point of view  ... he'll need a 2nd job to pay his bills

Offer LOD a one year deal on the minimum and 10k a game if we want him. Only minimum will count in the cap as long as we don't keep him for a second year.

not true, the match payments fall into the 2015 regardless. easy way to backend 100-200k without even realising it

You sure ? My understanding is what ever match payments we pay in 2014 ( eg 20 games * $10k = $200k) is what the minimum we have to count as the players value ( $200 k) in 2015 (if the player does stay ) however the match payments don't count towards the cap in 2014 and if the player does not stay around for 2015 then the match payments doesn't affect the cap in 2015.

This is what happened to Kingston due to match payments in 2009, he would have been valued in the 2010 cap at more then we could afford (and players couldn't take pay cuts to help ) as we didn't have the cap space

You're both wrong.

Match payments count towards current years cap based on number of games played LAST season.
So for Luke O'Donnell, we could sign him to $65k + match payments (ie, 2nd tier player) - however because he played 20 games it wouldn't be worth it (match payments counting against cap = $x x 20)

We could pay him bonuses (which was Kingston's scenario) where whatever games he plays THIS year are counted towards his cap value NEXT year (ie, $5k bonus per game x 20 games = $100k NEXT year, but nil this year).

The drama with the KK deal was that he only played 3 games the year before he signed with us - but the morons in charge gave him a bonuses deal instead of match payments. It's entirely the fault of the CEO and coach.

i'm not sure but i doubt it, i can't see a loophole like that being available to exploit without being plugged up quickly....eg sign nathan hindmarsh a match payments deal in his final season

So if LOD didn't get match payments this year as he signed for $x , wouldn't this mean he would be valued in 2014 what ever his 2014 contract is (eg minimum amount)

If he DID have match payments in 2013, then he could sign a deal WITHOUT match payments for 2014, and be valued at his 2014 contract amount.

Other than the name, what is the contractual difference b/w the match payments and the bonuses you describe above? Is it that the bonuses kick in at certain thresholds of matches played (e.g. bonus if play 10 FG games)? If not I don't see the substantive difference.

Well - there's the obvious salary cap implications which are different.

But, there is also much more room to be inventive with bonuses, and not so much with match payments
Match payments = play FG, get paid.
Bonuses COULD be the same thing (bonus for every FG game played. But could take other shapes - if you make Origin, bonus. If you score 10 tries, bonus. If you don't miss a tackle in a game, bonus (etc etc).

It's all subject to NRL approval as well...

Pou it might be more efficient to write regard when you post something intelligent rather than disregard every time you don't

Knowing you merkins I should write 'IMPORTANT' for anything about club politics and 'disregard' for anything about actual football.
