heard this on the radio. apparently the IC or whoever did this said it's more than just the alleged incident which has caused this. It's other incidents too, like pissing at Suncorp.

So far you'd have to think that the NRL is just being cautious re: not registering his contract. Surely, bar anything new coming to light, precedent dictates they'd register him while his trial is pending?

THE NRL has refused to register the contract of Newcastle recruit Russell Packer in the wake of a late-night incident that led to the prop facing assault charges.

The 24-year-old former Warriors forward was charged with assault occasioning actual bodily harm and failure to leave a licensed premises last week over an alleged incident in Sydney's Martin Place.
Packer was granted conditional bail and will appear in court on January 6.
In October, Packer was released from the final year of his contract to join the Knights on a four-year deal.
In making the decision to knock back Packer's registration, NRL chief operating officer Jim Doyle said his organisation had found enough evidence of behavioural breaches.
"We will always respect the court process and, if the only facts in question are those before the court, then clearly we will ordinarily wait for them to be resolved," Doyle said in a statement on Friday.
"We have also been clear that we will always act on any information that demonstrates behaviour which is contrary to the interests, welfare and image of the NRL.
"While we make no inference in relation to the charges that Russell is facing, our Integrity Unit has reported conduct that leaves us with little choice other than to refuse the application for registration." Packer made his NRL debut with the Warriors in 2008 and went on to play 110 games for the Auckland-based club.

Wow massive Double standards here.

Russ is a dickhead but this leaves me speechless.

I'm assuming they'll be deregistering the contacts of about 30 or 40 Aussie bad boys as well?

Moral of the story, don't be a dick until after your contract is registered.

I'd say this is a "wait and see" approach from all involved, a luxury that the off season can afford.

Whilst I like the stand they're taking, I can't disagree that this is showing some pretty significant double standards by the NRL.

I wouldn't complain if they kicked all these wankers out of the game to be honest.

Sounds like there is a big behaviour code of conduct change. if so, great. I applaud it - except -
- when a test player gets away with a similar thing.
- a similar thing happens mid contract and the player is not de-registered
- Packer becomes the only one.

Its not much different to a regular workplace really, its a lot harder/messier to fire someone (de-register) than it is to just not retain them past their probationary period (not register their contract to begin with).

It appears the timing is Russells biggest problem here.

My girlfriend says he's just a "typical Huntly boy". Can a New Zealander or a casual fancier of wool please confirm/deny?
