back to the original point: almost every debated star player on this page >> anybody on the panthers roster and would improve them exponentially

Maloney was found out defensively in Origin but is still a much better defender than Carney.

A player who plays a vital role within a great team is better than a player who tries to do it all and can only manage mediocre seasons.

Which team would you rather have?

Then you didn't 'carry your team'. You were just the best player in a shit side.

So only the best player in the best teams can carry a side? Here was me thinking that Hayne has been carrying the Eels for the past 3 years, but effectively he is simply the best player in a shit team.

I assume you are of the belief that Carney carried the Roosters in the 2010 season? He had a good year no doubt (Dally M medalist), but his team only finished 6th on the regular season ladder that year, and got dominated in the GF (32-8). Other than 2010, his teams have won only 1 other finals match since 2004, and the team he was supposedly carrying slumped to 11th in 2011.

DCE has been a leading player in a side that has won the comp, made the prelim final and then the GF in the three years he has been playing.

That's because Carney is always injured. That's the only reason.

Every NSW half is 'dominated'. None of them have developed any combinations with the other spine players, or any of the edge players on their side. Except for Maloney (with Pearce and Jennings).

So because the other NSW halves are shit, Carney is excused for being shit?

Plus, I don't see "Carney is always injured" as an excuse, I see it as another reason why is I don't rate him. The best players in the game not only dominate, but they are resilient as well. DCE hasn't missed a game through injury in the NRL. Nor has he set anyone alight, pissed on anyone, or ran from the cops and blamed his mate.

SBW spends at least half of every game at lock, and is very involved, particularly in defence. There's a reason he's won two premierships in only five seasons. He is dominant.[/QUOTE]

How much of the 2004 GF did SBW actually play? 13 of his 15 games that season were off the bench.

Apart from the Dragons in 2010, what was the last team to win a comp without an 'elite' player?
I guess Pou is arguing that Manly did but I would consider Lyon an elite player.

Storm 1999, but most Top 5 or 6 teams have a player that some people will argue is 'elite'...whatever the f**k that means in this context.

lazzo is regarded as one of the best players of all time. alongside him was undisputedly the best drug cheat of all time.

brett kimmorley at the time (rightly or wrongly) was considered the best halfback in the country.

this thread has dragged on now because the original point being the panthers can't win a title without players of that type of calibre (storm 1999) leading them

Well, IMHO Lazzo is long way from being one of the best players of all time. No offence to Lazzo.

At the end of the day, people end out defining elite players in terms of the success of their teams...so it becomes pretty circular.

wether he is or isn't, he was their captain and is STILL the only player to win titles (5) at 3 different clubs, and was capped only 20 odd times for his country.

if not the best prop the game has ever seen, he was a legend of his time and far more a player than anybody in any position running around for penrith at the moment.

On the subject of 'star' players: who are the five best players you guys have ever seen play the game? There's so many to choose from:

Steve Mortimer; Peter Sterling; Greg Alexander; Wally Lewis; Andrew Johns; Tommy Bishop; Ken Thornett; Reg Gasnier; etc, etc, etc.
In no particular order (and subject to change at a moment's notice) here are five off the top of my head:

Michael Cronin
Alan Langer
Bobby Fulton
Jarryd Hayne
Arthur Beetson.

Reckon you could mould a premiership-winning team around that lot.
(I just noticed, there's no Wests players in there.)
